Rad Power RadRunner Review
Most ebikes carry a passenger the way a shopping trolley carries a child: badly, and against the manufacturer's advice. The RadRunner was drawn around the job.

The RadRunner does not really compete with other electric bikes. It competes with the second car, the Vespa and the argument you have every time two of you need to get across town at the same time. Rad Power built a short, low, fat-tyred utility bike with a bench-length seat area, a rack integrated into the frame rather than bolted to it, and an official passenger kit with footpegs. That last item is the entire product.
Once you understand that, the rest of the specification stops looking like a set of compromises and starts looking like a set of decisions. The 20 inch wheels are not there to save money, they are there because a smaller wheel gives a lower standover, a shorter wheelbase and a stronger wheel under load. The upright, feet-forward position is not lazy design, it is what you need when a second adult is sitting behind you. The chassis is built around load rather than efficiency, and it pays for that everywhere else.
This review is written from the published specification, the class rules the bike operates under, and the physics of moving two adults on a bicycle. We have not ridden this particular bike, and you should be sceptical of any review that quotes a test mileage for it. What follows is the read you want before you shortlist it, particularly the payload and braking arithmetic, which is where most people carrying a passenger get an unpleasant surprise.
Verdict
Utility carries this score almost single-handedly. Nothing else in the sub-$2,000 bracket is designed, rated and factory-equipped to carry an adult passenger, and that is a capability rather than a feature. Value is strong for the same reason: measured against the thing it actually replaces, a scooter or a second car for short trips, it is very cheap. Ride quality is the weak column, and honestly so. Small wheels, an upright riding position with no forward lean to speak of, cadence sensing on the base model and 65 to 75 lb of bike make it hard work over distance. Range is average for the pack size once you account for how inefficient this shape is.

The passenger question, answered properly
Almost everyone searching for this bike is asking one thing: can I put another adult on the back. The answer is yes, with three conditions that deserve more than a sentence each.
Payload is a hard number, not a target
Rad has quoted a total system payload for the RadRunner in the region of 300 lb, and that figure covers everyone and everything on the bike at once. Rider, passenger, backpack, groceries. Two adults of 150 lb each leave you nothing. Two adults of 175 lb each are over it before either of them picks up a bag.
That limit is not a legal disclaimer, it is set by the weakest of the frame, the wheel build, the tyre load rating and the brakes. Exceeding it does not produce an immediate failure, it produces spokes that loosen faster, a rear rim that goes out of true, bearings that wear early and a bike that stops less well than the geometry implies. If you and your passenger are close to the number, look at a purpose-built long-tail instead, which is the argument made in electric cargo bikes, or at the dedicated two-up designs in two seater electric bikes. The passenger kit is the legal argument
Most US state vehicle codes contain a version of the same clause: a bicycle may not carry more people than it is designed and equipped to carry. Several states go further and require a permanent, regular seat for each rider, and a separate provision usually covers small children in a proper child seat. The wording matters because it turns on design and equipment, not on whether there happens to be room.
A commuter bike with a rear rack fails that test. The rack is designed and rated for cargo, the manufacturer says so in writing, and there is nowhere for the passenger's feet to go. The RadRunner with the factory seat pad and footpegs fitted is the rare bike at this price that passes it on the manufacturer's own terms. That is the whole reason the model exists, and it is worth understanding rather than assuming. Rules vary by state and sometimes by city, so read ebike laws by state and check the local code before you rely on it. Braking with two adults is the part nobody plans for
This is the most useful paragraph in the review. Adding a 160 lb passenger to a 70 lb bike and a 180 lb rider takes the system from roughly 250 lb to roughly 410 lb, an increase of around 60 percent. Kinetic energy scales with mass, so at 20 mph your brakes now have around 60 percent more energy to turn into heat, and if the limit is brake torque rather than tyre grip, your stopping distance goes up by something close to the same proportion.
Then there is the weight distribution problem. On a normal bicycle, most of your stopping power comes from the front wheel, because braking pitches weight forward and loads it. With a passenger sitting behind the rear axle area, the static balance shifts backwards, the front tyre carries less load, and the front brake can generate less force before it locks. You end up leaning harder on the rear brake, which is the weaker one, on a heavier bike.
How the moped format actually rides
The RadRunner sits in an odd space between a bicycle and a small motorcycle, and the honest description is that it rides like neither. The bars are high and swept, the seat is long and flat, the pedals sit forward of your hips, and the 20 by 3.3 inch tyres run at low pressure. At walking pace, which is where a utility bike spends a lot of its life, this is excellent. The low centre of gravity and short wheelbase make it easy to paddle around, turn in a driveway and hold upright with a passenger climbing on.
Two things about the small wheels are worth being precise about. A 20 inch wheel meets a pothole edge or a kerb lip at a steeper effective angle than a 27.5 inch wheel, so it drops into holes rather than rolling across them, and it loses more speed doing it. The fat, low-pressure tyre buys most of that comfort back, which is why the format works at all, but it does so by adding rolling resistance. The upright position is the part that surprises people. It is genuinely comfortable for the first couple of miles and progressively less so after that, because there is no forward lean to let your legs contribute properly and no way to shift your weight off the saddle. Your entire body weight sits on one contact point. On a bike where the motor does most of the work at 15 mph that is fine. On a fifteen mile commute it is not, and no saddle upgrade fixes a geometry problem, though ebike seats and saddles covers what actually helps.
The base RadRunner has traditionally been single speed with cadence sensing. Single speed on a bike with a 750W class motor and a 20 mph ceiling is defensible, because the motor covers the gear range you would otherwise need. Cadence sensing is the bigger deal. A magnet ring on the crank tells the controller only that the pedals are turning, so power arrives after a short delay at whatever level the assist setting dictates, then runs on for a beat when you stop. It feels switched rather than proportional. The throttle largely rescues it, because you can meter power directly, but it is a real step behind the torque-sensing feel described in torque sensor versus cadence sensor. Motor, battery and realistic range
The RadRunner runs a geared rear hub motor in the 750W class, the legal ceiling for a compliant ebike in the United States, and Rad sells it as Class 2: pedal assist and throttle, both capped at 20 mph. A geared hub is the right choice for this bike. The internal reduction lets a physically small motor produce useful torque at low wheel speeds, which is exactly what you want pulling two adults away from a light. What it cannot do is use your gears, so on a long steep climb it falls out of its efficient band and converts current into heat rather than progress. The battery is what predicts range, and the number to use is watt hours. A 48V pack of around 14Ah is 48 multiplied by 14, roughly 672 Wh. Compare watt hours across bikes and you are comparing like with like; compare amp hours across different voltages and you are comparing nothing at all. That distinction is worth ten minutes in 36V vs 48V vs 52V ebike batteries.

These are estimates derived from pack size and the power a heavy, upright, fat-tyred bike needs at city speeds, not measured results. The row that matters is the last one. Carrying a passenger roughly doubles consumption compared with relaxed solo riding, because you have added 60 percent to the mass and the passenger contributes nothing to propulsion. Plan two-up trips around twelve to fifteen miles and you will not be walking. Anyone shopping primarily on distance should read longest range electric bikes before choosing on a headline claim.
The accessory ecosystem, which is the quiet advantage
Rad has sold this platform in very large numbers over many years, and the result is an accessory catalogue that is unusually deep for a single model. Passenger seat pads with a backrest, footpegs, running boards, front racks that mount to the frame rather than the fork, centre consoles that sit in the frame triangle, panniers sized to the rack, and child seat adapters. There is also a substantial third-party market, which only exists because the platform has been stable long enough for small manufacturers to tool up for it.
This sounds like a minor point until you have spent an evening trying to make a generic rack fit a frame that was never designed for one. The RadRunner's rear rack is part of the frame, with defined mounting points, which means accessories bolt on rather than being clamped on and hoped for. The other half of the Rad argument is spare parts. The company has been building since 2007, sells its own controllers, displays, batteries and motors directly, and publishes service documentation. That is genuinely unusual in a market where the normal failure mode is an importer moving on to a new model with different parts, leaving a five-year-old bike unfixable. Rad has revised this platform several times and the Plus and 3 Plus designations have covered more than one configuration. Confirm the motor, sensor type, brake type, battery size and payload rating for the exact model in front of you rather than relying on any of these bands.
Who should buy it
Buy it if the passenger is the point. Two adults getting three miles across town, a partner to the station, a teenager to school. Nothing else at this money is designed and rated for it, and improvising with a rack is both uncomfortable and, in most states, not legal. This is the one clear case where the RadRunner has no real competition.
Buy it if your riding is short, dense and full of stops. Errands, a two mile commute, the school run, a delivery shift. The low centre of gravity, throttle and short wheelbase are genuinely well suited to that, which is why the format keeps showing up in ebikes for food delivery.
Buy something else if distance and comfort matter. A fifteen mile commute on an upright 70 lb bike with 20 inch wheels is an endurance event, not a ride. Buy something else if you want proportional power delivery. If pedalling should feel like pedalling rather than like operating a switch, a torque-sensing bike is the answer, and the Aventon Level 3 is the obvious cross-shop at similar money. You give up the passenger capability entirely, which is the trade.
Buy something else if you actually want a moped. The RadRunner looks the part but stops helping at 20 mph, and it is legally a bicycle in most places. Two pieces of homework before you order. First, decide whether you need the passenger package as standard, because on some versions it is fitted and on others it is a separate purchase, and buying the cheaper bike then adding the kit is not always cheaper.
