Ebikes for Food Delivery
Delivery is a commuter bike doing five times the mileage in the worst possible conditions. The bike that wins is not the fastest one, it is the one you can keep on the road.

A commuter ebike does maybe 2,000 miles a year in two clean bursts a day. A delivery bike does 8,000 to 14,000 miles a year, almost all of it in first gear traffic, with hundreds of stops per shift, a loaded bag over the rear wheel, and no option to skip the rainy days. It is the same machine doing a fundamentally harder job.
That changes what you should shop for. Peak wattage and claimed range, the two numbers the category sells on, matter far less than whether the brake pads are a size your local shop stocks and whether the battery will still hold a useful charge in eighteen months. Delivery is the one ebike use case where total cost of ownership is not an abstraction: it comes directly out of what you earn per hour.

What forty hours a week actually does to a bike
The damage does not come from mileage. It comes from the pattern of the mileage.
Stop-start cycles. A delivery shift involves hundreds of accelerations from a standstill, most of them with a loaded bag and many of them uphill from a kerb. Each one asks the motor for peak current at zero rpm, which is the operating point where a hub motor is least efficient and produces the most heat. Each one also asks the brakes to convert the kinetic energy of a 60 pound bike, a 180 pound rider, and 15 pounds of food back into heat, several hundred times a day.
Load, permanently. A loaded insulated backpack puts the weight high and on the rider, which is easier on the bike but harder on your back. A rack-mounted crate puts 20 to 30 pounds directly over the rear wheel, which is where the hub motor, the cassette, the heaviest spokes, and the tire that wears out first all live. Rear spoke breakage on delivery bikes is common enough that experienced riders carry a spare spoke.
Kerbs, potholes, and drain covers. Delivery riders take the direct line, hop kerbs, and ride the gutter where the debris is. That is a wheel-and-tire punishment regime, not a road-surface one.
Daily battery handling. If you pull the pack every night to charge it indoors, the mounting rail and the contact block go through several hundred insertion cycles a year. Contacts wear, latches loosen, and intermittent power cutouts follow. Keep the contacts clean and dry, and stop levering the pack out at an angle.
Weather, without a choice. Commuters skip the wet days. Delivery riders work them, because that is when the orders are. Water ingress at the display and controller connectors, corrosion on brake and derailleur cables, and road salt on the drivetrain all become routine concerns rather than occasional ones.
Battery cycle life is the real running cost
This is the number that decides whether a delivery bike is cheap or expensive to own, and it is almost never discussed at the point of sale.
Lithium-ion cells degrade with charge cycles. Good cells in a well-managed pack hold roughly 500 to 800 full cycles before capacity falls to about 80 percent of new, which is the conventional end-of-useful-life marker. Cheap cells in a poorly managed pack can be well under 400.
Now do the delivery arithmetic. A commuter riding 12 miles a day on a 700 Wh pack uses maybe a third of a cycle, charges twice a week, and takes six years to reach 500 cycles. A full-time delivery rider covering 45 miles a shift uses a full cycle a day, and many use one and a half by charging at a break. Six days a week, that is 300 to 450 full-equivalent cycles a year.
- Cycle budget of a decent pack
- Roughly 500 to 800 full cycles to 80 percent capacity. Fast charging, charging at high state of charge, and heat all shorten it.
- Commuter use
- About 80 to 120 full-equivalent cycles a year. The pack outlives the rest of the bike.
- Full-time delivery use
- About 300 to 450 full-equivalent cycles a year. Expect meaningful range loss in 12 to 24 months.
- Replacement cost
- Roughly $400 to $800 for a manufacturer pack on a mainstream brand. Cheaper generic packs exist and are the single worst place to save money on a bike you ride for a living.
- Practical consequence
- A pack that has fallen to 75 percent turns a comfortable eight hour shift into one that needs a mid-shift charge or a spare pack.
Three responses to this are all reasonable. Buy the largest pack the bike offers, because a bigger battery does a smaller fraction of a cycle for the same distance and therefore ages more slowly in calendar terms. Buy a bike with a second-battery option so you can swap rather than wait. Or accept the cost and schedule it, the way a driver schedules tires. Two habits genuinely extend pack life and cost nothing. Stop charging to 100 percent unless you need the full range that shift, since sitting at full charge is what ages cells fastest. And let the pack cool for twenty minutes after a shift before plugging it in, because charging a hot battery compounds the damage. In cold weather, note that capacity drops sharply below freezing and returns when the pack warms up, so a shift that ends at 20 degrees will show less range than the same shift in spring.
Consumables you will replace in weeks, not years
At 200 to 300 miles a week, service intervals stop being annual and start being monthly. These are realistic figures for a heavy bike ridden hard in a city, and they are the reason the cheapest bike is rarely the cheapest bike.

Two conclusions fall out of that table. First, sintered pads are worth the premium: they last two to three times as long as resin and handle heat far better on a heavy bike, at the cost of more noise when wet. Second, mid-drives are a poor fit for delivery unless you have a specific reason to want one, because every newton metre of motor torque goes through a chain you are already replacing every six weeks. On tires, buy the heaviest puncture protection you can find rather than the fastest rolling casing. A flat is not a mechanical problem on a delivery shift, it is a cancelled order and an hour of unpaid time. Tire liners, sealant, or a genuinely armoured commuter casing all pay for themselves in one avoided roadside repair, and a casing marked to the ECE-R75 standard is the one to look for on a bike carrying this much weight at this speed.
Throttle, traffic, and all-weather requirements
Why the throttle earns its place
Pedal assist needs the crank to turn before the motor does anything. A cadence sensor typically waits for a quarter to a full crank revolution, which is a fraction of a second in the countryside and an uncomfortably long time when you are trying to slot into a gap in city traffic from a dead stop with a loaded bag. A throttle gives instant torque with your thumb while your feet find the pedals.
It also solves the loaded hill restart, which is the single most awkward moment in a delivery shift, and it lets you creep along at walking pace beside stopped traffic without wobbling. Use it as a launch tool rather than a riding style: throttle-only riding is substantially less efficient than pedalling, and on a delivery duty cycle that difference shows up directly in battery cycles. Weather kit that is not optional
- Full-length fenders with mudflaps. Not the stubby ones. A rear flap keeps spray off the bag and off whoever is behind you; a front flap keeps your feet dry, which decides whether hour six is bearable.
- Lights wired to the main battery. Rechargeable clip-on lights die at the worst moment. A hub-powered or main-battery light never needs charging, which matters when your shift starts in daylight and ends in the dark.
- A rear rack rated for real weight. Check the rating, not the appearance. Most are 25 to 55 pounds and a full catering order plus a crate gets there quickly.
- Hydraulic disc brakes. Cable discs fade and go out of adjustment as the pads wear, which on this duty cycle means adjusting them weekly. The heat and stopping distance argument is in ebike brakes.
- A phone mount with a hard-wired USB feed. Navigation plus the platform app will flatten a phone in four hours, and a dead phone ends the shift.
Theft risk at every single drop-off
A commuter locks up twice a day in two known locations. A delivery rider locks up thirty to sixty times a shift, in places chosen by the customer, often for ninety seconds, frequently out of sight of the bike. That is a completely different exposure, and it is the reason so many delivery riders are on cheap bikes.
The practical difficulty is that proper security is slow. A hardened chain and a ground anchor is the right answer for overnight storage and a ridiculous one for a ninety second doorstep. What works in practice is a layered approach:
- A fast lock for short stops. A folding lock or a mini U-lock that lives in a frame mount and goes on in five seconds. Slower than nothing, faster than a chain, and enough to stop the opportunist who is walking past.
- Take the battery with you if the stop is more than a minute. The pack is a third of the value of the bike and it fits in the bag. A bike without a battery is much less attractive and much less rideable.
- A tracker inside the frame or under the saddle. Recovery rates are not great, but they are not zero, and it costs very little.
- Never leave the bike unlocked because the stop is short. Almost all delivery bike thefts happen during stops the rider described as brief.
- Lock the frame, not just a wheel, and use a serial number registry so a recovered bike can actually be returned to you.

Why so many delivery riders end up on uncertified machines
Spend an hour watching delivery traffic in any large American city and you will see bikes that are not bicycles: 1,500 to 3,000 watt machines, moped bodywork, vestigial pedals nobody turns, 30 mph in a bike lane. The reasons riders buy them are entirely rational at the individual level and the consequences are severe.
The logic is simple. Pay is per delivery, so speed is income. A machine that does 30 mph instead of 20 completes more drops per hour. A 1,500 Wh dual-battery pack finishes a shift without a charge stop. And these bikes are often cheaper than a certified brand-name commuter, because the money went into cells and a motor rather than into testing, certification, and a dealer network.
What it actually costs
- It is not a bicycle in law. In most US states the three-class framework caps a legal ebike at 750 watts and 20 or 28 mph depending on class. Above that, the machine is a motor vehicle. That means registration, a licence plate, a driving licence, and insurance, none of which these machines can obtain because they cannot pass motor vehicle equipment standards. - Confiscation. Enforcement varies enormously by city and has been tightening. A confiscated bike is a total loss of your working capital with no recourse.
- Uninsured liability. If you injure a pedestrian on an unregistered motor vehicle, you are personally liable, and no policy you hold will respond. This is the risk riders underestimate most and the one that can follow you for years.
- Battery fires. Uncertified packs and mismatched chargers are behind the lithium-ion fires that pushed New York City to require UL 2849 certification for ebikes sold in the city. Delivery riders are disproportionately affected because they charge more often, charge indoors, and are the most likely to be sold a cheap replacement pack.
- No warranty and no parts. When the controller fails on a grey-market machine, the bike is finished.
What high power seems to buy
- Higher average speed, which on per-delivery pay is real money
- Large dual-battery packs that finish a shift without a charge stop
- Often cheaper than a certified brand-name bike of similar capability
- Torque that makes loaded hill starts effortless
- Widely available and widely used, so it feels normal
What it actually costs
- Legally a motor vehicle in most states, without plates, licence, or insurance
- No liability cover at all if you injure someone
- Confiscation risk that grows as enforcement tightens
- Uncertified batteries and chargers, which is the fire risk cities are legislating against
- No warranty, no dealer, and no parts once something electrical fails
The honest middle path is a switchable Class 3 bike, which gives you 28 mph pedal assist where local law allows it and a throttle to 20 mph, from a brand that certifies its packs. New York City is a notable outlier and permits throttle-equipped ebikes up to 25 mph, which was written substantially with delivery workers in mind. Check your own jurisdiction rather than assuming, and be very careful with anything advertised above 750 watts, because that is the line where registration, a licence, and insurance start to apply.
What it actually costs per hour worked
Work it as a business, because it is one. Take a rider doing 30 hours a week across roughly 48 weeks, covering about 11,000 miles a year on a $1,700 bike kept for two and a half years.
- Bike depreciation
- About $680 a year, assuming the bike is worth little after two and a half years of this duty cycle.
- Battery replacement
- About $400 a year, from a $600 pack replaced roughly every 18 months. The largest single running cost.
- Brake pads and rotors
- About $350 to $470 a year on sintered pads plus a rotor set, if you fit them yourself.
- Tires and tubes
- About $250 to $320 a year, mostly rear tires, plus sealant or liners.
- Chain, cassette, cables
- About $200 a year on a hub-motor bike. Roughly double that on a mid-drive.
- Electricity
- About $40 to $60 a year. Roughly 10 to 25 cents per full charge. Genuinely negligible.
- Locks, tracker, insurance
- About $150 to $400 a year depending on whether you carry a specialist policy.
- Total
- Roughly $2,100 to $2,700 a year, against about 1,440 hours worked. Call it $1.50 to $2.00 an hour, rising towards $2.50 if you pay a shop for labour.
Two things fall out of this. Electricity is a rounding error, which is the whole economic case for delivering by ebike rather than by car. And the battery plus brake pads together are more than half the bill, which means the two questions worth asking before you buy any bike are what a replacement pack costs and whether the brakes take a common pad shape.
The corollary is that buying the cheapest bike is often not the cheapest option. A $700 bike with cable brakes, an uncertified pack, and no parts supply can easily cost more per hour than a $1,800 bike with hydraulic brakes and a dealer, because the expensive bike keeps working and the cheap one keeps you off the road.
