Rad Power Bikes: The Whole Range, and the Real Buying Case

Rad is the biggest ebike brand in North America and it is regularly beaten on paper by companies you have never heard of. That is not an accident, and understanding why is how you decide whether to buy one.

Every few months someone posts a comparison table showing that a Rad Power bike has fewer watt hours, a cadence sensor instead of a torque sensor, and a higher price than a rival you found on a marketplace listing. The table is usually correct. It is also mostly beside the point, and the gap between those two facts is what this guide is about.

Rad Power Bikes started as a high school project in Northern California and became, out of Seattle, the largest electric bike company in North America by a wide margin. It sold hundreds of thousands of bikes into a market that barely existed when it started, and it did that by making one specific bet: that most people buying a first ebike care about whether the thing works and whether anyone will help them when it does not, far more than they care about sensor architecture.

That bet aged well. It also means the honest recommendation is conditional, and the condition is what kind of buyer you are. If you can bleed a brake and source a controller from a Chinese supplier, Rad is not for you and you already know it. The short version RadCity is the commuter. RadRunner is the short utility bike for hauling things and people. RadRover is the fat tyre model. RadWagon is the longtail cargo bike. RadExpand is the folder. Almost all of them are Class 2, cadence sensed, heavy, and built around one semi-integrated 48V battery that fits across much of the range. On paper cheaper rivals often win. What you buy instead is parts availability, a service network, and standardisation.

Why scale is the product

Buying an ebike is not like buying a bicycle. A bicycle is a mechanical object made from parts that any shop in the world stocks. An ebike is a bicycle with a proprietary battery, a proprietary controller, a proprietary display and a wiring loom that only that manufacturer documents. When any of those fail, you are not shopping in a global parts market. You are shopping from one company.

This is why company size is a specification, even though it never appears on a spec sheet. A brand that sold four hundred bikes into your country three years ago has no reason to stock a controller for a model it has discontinued. A brand that sold hundreds of thousands has a warehouse, a parts catalogue with SKUs, and a financial reason to keep supporting them.

Rad's advantage is that ordering a replacement fender, a display, a charger or a battery is a normal transaction on a website rather than an email negotiation with an overseas supplier. That is unglamorous, it costs you money at purchase time, and it is worth more than a hundred extra watt hours over the life of the bike.

The counterweight is that the company has visibly contracted. It closed its physical retail stores and made significant layoffs, and search results about the brand's health reflect that. It is still operating and still shipping parts, but the shop-you-can-walk-into part of the promise is thinner than it was. Check what service exists near you before you order.

The lineup, by job

Rad names bikes after what they do, which is more helpful than most brands manage. Model numbers increment with generations, so a RadCity 5 Plus is the fifth-generation commuter rather than a different bike.

RadCity: the commuter

The RadCity is the bike most people should start with if their riding is pavement. Larger wheels than the rest of the range, a proper multi-speed drivetrain, a seated upright position designed for covering ten miles at a time, and the usual Rad kit of integrated lights, fenders and a rear rack fitted as standard rather than sold as an upgrade.

This is also where Rad has been putting its newer technology. The current generation moved to a torque sensor on at least some configurations, which changes the character of the bike substantially, and to hydraulic disc brakes. RadRunner: utility, passengers, and the surprise best seller

The RadRunner is the strangest bike in the range and probably the most useful. It is short, it sits on small wide tyres, it has a long flat rear deck instead of a normal rack, and the base version has historically run a very simple drivetrain because it is not trying to be efficient at speed.

What it is trying to do is carry things. Passenger seats, footpegs, front racks, baskets, insulated bags, child seats: the accessory list for this frame is longer than for anything else Rad makes, and the bike is genuinely capable of carrying an adult passenger on the back, which puts it in the same practical bracket as the bikes in our two-seater electric bike guide. It also fits a wider range of rider heights than almost any other bike, because the low step-through and short frame suit riders from about five feet upward.

The trade is that it is not a distance bike. The riding position is upright and compact, the gearing is limited on simpler versions, and small wide tyres are not efficient. Our RadRunner review covers where the line falls between useful and cramped.

RadRover: the fat tyre one

The RadRover is Rad's fat tyre model, on wide 26 inch tyres with a suspension fork, and it is the bike that put the company on the map in the first place. It is the choice for gravel, packed dirt, sand, snow and roads that have given up.

Fat tyres cost you. They add weight, they add rolling resistance, and they eat range at a rate that surprises people who compared watt hours and assumed all bikes use them at the same rate. RadWagon: the cargo bike

The RadWagon is a longtail: a stretched rear end with a long deck, a low step-through, a high payload rating, and enough accessory support to carry two children or a week of groceries. It is the model that replaces car journeys rather than bicycle journeys, and for a household that uses it properly it is the best value in the entire range.

It also has the range's one genuinely awkward engineering decision. Recent generations use an unusual wheel size chosen to keep the deck low while retaining stability, which means tyre choice is limited to what Rad and a small number of suppliers offer rather than the enormous global market for common sizes. That is not a dealbreaker, but it is exactly the kind of detail that matters five years in. RadExpand: the folder

The RadExpand is a folding fat tyre bike aimed at RVs, boats, small apartments and car boots. It folds, but the honest framing is that it folds into a smaller heavy object rather than a portable one. Rad has also sold a trike, a lightweight single-speed city bike and various discontinued variants over the years. Buy from the current catalogue rather than from an old review, because the range has been pruned considerably.

Where Rad loses on paper, and how much it matters

Take this seriously, because the criticisms are legitimate.

Watt hours. Rad standardised years ago on a 48V pack of roughly 670 watt hours, and it has stayed there while rivals pushed past 700 and in some cases past 900. On a bike this heavy, watt hours are the range constraint, so a rival with 20 percent more capacity really does go 20 percent further on the same terrain. That is a real loss.

Sensor type. Much of the range has historically used cadence sensing, which turns the motor on at a set level once the pedals move, rather than torque sensing, which scales assistance to how hard you are pushing. Cadence sensing feels like a switch. Torque sensing feels like strong legs. Weight. Most of the range sits between roughly 60 and 80 lb. Steel-tubed frames, a full accessory load and a substantial battery add up, and no amount of motor power makes a heavy bike easy to lift onto a car rack.

Motors. Rear hub motors throughout, in the 750W nominal class. That is plenty for flat and rolling terrain and it is the weak point on sustained steep climbs, because a hub motor loses efficiency exactly when wheel speed drops and you need it most. If you live somewhere genuinely hilly, read mid-drive versus hub motor before assuming more watts is the answer.

Price. A rival will show you more capacity, a torque sensor and sometimes suspension for the same money. On the spreadsheet, that rival wins. The spreadsheet does not have a column for whether the company answers the phone.

What you are actually buying

Rad's real product is a set of things that only show up after purchase.

Parts you can order. Displays, controllers, chargers, batteries, fenders, racks, brake levers, motors. Listed with part numbers, purchasable directly. This is normal for a car and rare for an ebike, and it is the difference between a repairable bike and a disposable one.

Documentation. Manuals, exploded diagrams, torque figures, and a large body of published guidance for common problems. When something rattles, there is usually an answer online that is specific to your bike rather than a general one about ebikes.

A service network. Not the retail stores of a few years ago, but a set of authorised service partners and mobile mechanics, plus the fact that Rad bikes are common enough that most independent shops have seen one. Being common is itself a service feature.

Safety certification. Rad has been publicly vocal about battery safety standards and UL certification at a time when much of the market was not, which is worth something if the bike is going to be charged inside your home. Confirm the current certification status of the exact model you are buying rather than assuming it.

A company likely to still exist. The blunt version: your battery will need replacing in four to six years, it costs several hundred dollars, and it can only come from the manufacturer. If the manufacturer is gone, your bike is a heavy bicycle. The four-year test Before buying any direct-to-consumer ebike, search the brand name plus "replacement battery" and see whether you can actually find a purchasable pack for a model from four years ago. If you cannot, you are buying a bike with an expiry date. Rad passes this test more reliably than almost anyone else in its price band.

The standardised parts ecosystem

This is the underrated part. Rad designed its range around shared components: the same battery format across much of the lineup, common displays, common brake levers, common lighting, and an accessory system where a bag or a rack bought for one bike often fits another.

Three practical consequences follow. First, a two-bike household can keep one spare battery that fits both, which is a meaningful hedge against a pack failing mid-ownership. Second, accessories retain value and usefulness when you change bikes within the range. Third, and most importantly, standardisation is why parts stay in stock. A component used across five models sells enough volume to justify keeping it on a shelf. A component unique to one discontinued model does not.

Compare this to the typical marketplace ebike, where the battery is a shape that exists because a factory had that mould available that quarter, and you can see why the spec sheet comparison misses something.

Rad discounts heavily and often, particularly at generation changeovers and around holidays, so treat those bands as a starting point rather than a quote. Weights vary with frame size and fitted accessories. Check the current specification for the model and generation you are looking at.

For anyone whose riding is pavement and whose trips are between two and fifteen miles, this is the bike. Larger wheels roll better, the drivetrain has usable gears, and the current generation fixed the two things people complained about most: brakes and sensor type.

The RadRunner is the best value in the range if your riding is short and involves carrying something. It is a poor choice if you want to cover distance, because the position and the gearing both work against you past about eight miles.

Buy it if your route is genuinely unpaved for a meaningful portion of the ride. On tarmac it is slower, heavier and shorter ranged than a RadCity for no benefit you will feel.

Rad against the spec-sheet brands, and against a bike shop

Against the direct-to-consumer discounters

Brands like Heybike, Velowave and a long tail of marketplace sellers will show you more capacity and more accessories for less money. Some of them make perfectly good bikes. The questions the table does not answer are which components sit behind the headline numbers, how long a warranty claim takes, and whether the model you bought will still have a purchasable battery in year five.

The rule of thumb: the cheaper the bike, the more of your ownership cost is deferred rather than removed. If you enjoy working on things and can improvise, that deferral is fine and you save real money. If a broken bike means a bike you stop riding, pay the premium.

Against Lectric

Lectric is the closest thing Rad has to a direct competitor on the support axis rather than the spec axis. It is also large, also American, also parts-supported, and generally several hundred dollars cheaper. Lectric wins on price and on how much kit is included. Rad wins on frame quality, on having a genuine commuter in the RadCity rather than a folder-derived one, and on the breadth of its cargo and utility range. Both are defensible. Against a bike shop brand

At $2,800 and up you get a mid-drive motor from Bosch, Shimano or Brose, a name-brand drivetrain, and a shop that stocks parts for what it sold you. That bike climbs better, weighs less and lasts longer. It also costs roughly twice as much and usually has no throttle, which is a bigger deal than spec sheets suggest for riders who wanted one. The short decision

  • Pavement commute, one bike for everything: RadCity.

  • Unpaved surfaces for a real part of your ride: RadRover.
  • Storage is the constraint: RadExpand, and accept that folded is not the same as portable.
  • You want the most specification per dollar and can fix things: buy something cheaper and keep the difference.
