POC Bike Helmets and Eyewear
A Swedish brand that started with a medical brief rather than a marketing one. The result is bigger shells, louder colours, and prices that make people flinch.

Most helmet brands grew out of racing. A sponsor needed a lid on a podium, the lid got lighter and faster, and safety improved as a side effect of a category that had to keep passing certification anyway. POC started from the other end. The company was founded in Sweden in 2005 with a stated goal of reducing the consequences of accidents for gravity sports athletes, and its early design partners included people from the medical and orthopaedic world rather than the wind tunnel world.
You can see that origin in the products without knowing any of the history. POC helmets have more shell volume than their competitors at the same weight class, they sit lower around the temples and the occipital bone, and a disproportionate share of the catalogue is finished in fluorescent orange, uranium yellow or a colour POC calls Hydrogen White that is functionally a reflector. None of that is accidental. It is the same brief expressed three ways.
The catch, and this guide is going to keep returning to it, is price. A POC road helmet frequently costs two to three times what a perfectly legal, perfectly certified helmet from a mass brand costs, and the marginal safety return on that money is real but it is not proportional. Knowing exactly what the premium buys is the point of reading this.
Why a POC looks odd next to everything else
Put a POC Ventral next to a conventional race helmet and the difference is not styling, it is volume. The POC shell extends further down at the sides and further back at the base of the skull, and the EPS foam under it is thicker in the places where a race helmet has been carved away to save grams and open a vent.
That matters because of how a helmet actually works. Foam manages energy by crushing, and the amount of energy it can absorb before it bottoms out is a function of how much foam sits between your skull and the thing you hit. Every gram a manufacturer removes to win a weight comparison is foam that is no longer there. POC has consistently chosen to lose that comparison. A Ventral Air MIPS in a medium sits around 250 to 300 g depending on size and generation, which is heavier than the lightest race helmets but not dramatically so, because POC recovers weight through unibody construction rather than through carving.
The second visible thing is colour. POC is unusually committed to high visibility finishes and reflective detailing, and it says so in its own marketing rather than treating fluorescent as a fashion cycle. The third difference is fit hardware. POC retention systems tend to be simple: a large dial, a wide cradle, and unusually generous padding. There is less of the intricate multi position adjustment you get from Giro or Specialized. Whether that is elegance or a shortfall depends on your head. SPIN, MIPS Integra, and what neither of them is
This is the section where the marketing gets muddled everywhere in the industry, so be precise about it.
CPSC 1203 is the standard. It is a mandatory US federal regulation, it is pass or fail, and every bicycle helmet legally sold in the United States meets it. It tests direct linear impact onto flat and curved anvils, plus retention strength and coverage. A $40 helmet that passes CPSC 1203 and a $290 POC that passes CPSC 1203 have both cleared the same bar. There is no premium version of the certificate.
MIPS and SPIN are proprietary systems, not certifications. They address rotational acceleration, the twisting the brain experiences in an angled impact, which the CPSC test does not measure at all. MIPS is a licensed low friction interface layer sold to many brands. SPIN was POC in-house answer: a pad filled with a silicone compound that shears sideways under load, letting the helmet move a few millimetres relative to the head without a separate slip liner. POC has since moved the bulk of its range onto MIPS and MIPS Integra, which integrates the slip surface into the comfort padding rather than adding the separate yellow shell you see in older designs.
Integra is worth understanding because it fixes the two real complaints about classic MIPS: the extra liner ate ventilation, and it added a few grams and some hair pulling. Integra puts the low friction interface in the pads themselves, so airflow through the shell is uninterrupted. It is the reason a modern POC road helmet can carry rotational management and still vent well.
The road line: Ventral, Octal and Omne
POC road helmets sit in three tiers, and the differences between them are more meaningful than the usual good, better, best ladder.
Ventral
The Ventral is the flagship and the one POC sponsored teams race. It is built around a claim that is rare in helmets: that you can have a large protective shell and still manage air well, by routing air through deep internal channels rather than by cutting the shell away. The Ventral Air version adds larger front intakes for hot weather and is the one most riders should buy; the plain Ventral trades some airflow for a smoother outer surface.
Be honest about the aerodynamics. A Ventral is not an aero helmet in the sense that a Kask Utopia or a Giro Eclipse is. It is a well managed vented helmet with a large frontal area. Octal
The Octal is the older design and the one that made POC name in road cycling. It is lighter than the Ventral, it uses a unibody shell with a very thin polycarbonate skin that wraps the whole EPS rather than just the top, and it has fewer, larger vents. The party trick is the Eye Garage, a moulded slot at the front vent designed to hold sunglasses arms securely when you push them up onto the helmet.
At its current street price the Octal MIPS is the value entry into the POC road range, and for a rider who is not chasing the last few watts it gives up almost nothing important to the Ventral.
Omne
The Omne is the all rounder: road shape, fuller coverage than a pure race helmet, a rear light mount on some versions, and a price closer to the mainstream. It is the POC most suited to commuting and to electric road bikes, where you spend more time in traffic and less time worrying about grams. The trail line: Kortal, Tectal and Axion
POC trail helmets follow the same philosophy with the volume turned up. The shells drop lower at the rear and the temples, the visors are longer, and the shapes are designed around goggle straps rather than glasses.
The Tectal is the long running trail half shell, with an aramid grid bonded inside the EPS to spread load and resist penetration. The Kortal sits above it, adds more coverage still, and in the Kortal Race MIPS version includes a NFC medical ID chip that a first responder can scan to read your emergency information. That is a genuinely POC idea and nobody else does it as standard. The Axion is the accessible end of the line, a lighter trail shell with MIPS at roughly half the flagship price, and it is the model most people should look at first.
Where POC trail helmets are notably good is retention adjustment range and the way the shell clears a goggle strap without the helmet lifting. Where they are less impressive is visor adjustment, which is functional rather than clever. The eyewear, which is the surprise
Plenty of helmet brands sell eyewear as a merchandising exercise. POC does not, and its glasses are the part of the catalogue that most deserves attention.
The signature shapes, Aspire, Devour, Do Blade and Propel, use very large single lens shields, in some cases large enough that the frame is essentially a rim around a piece of curved optic the size of a small goggle. That gives coverage above the eyebrow when your head is down in the drops, which is the coverage that actually matters and the thing most fashion derived sports frames fail at. The lenses are made with Carl Zeiss and sold under the Clarity name, and each Clarity tint is specified for a use case rather than a look: a road tint that lifts contrast between dry and wet asphalt, a trail tint tuned for dappled forest light, and clear or low light options. This is the same idea as Oakley Prizm and it works for the same reason, by selectively cutting narrow wavelength bands so adjacent surface colours separate. Two practical notes. POC frames are large, so riders with narrow faces should check fit carefully or look at the smaller shapes. And the Eye Garage on POC helmets is designed around POC arms, so the two products together do work better than either does with a rival.

This is the helmet the rest of the range is measured against. It gives you POC full coverage argument with cooling that holds up on a summer climb, which is the combination the brand exists to sell. It is not the fastest helmet in a wind tunnel and it does not pretend to be. Buy it if you ride fast on open roads and want the maximum foam your neck will tolerate.
POC Octal MIPS

The Octal is the older design and that is the reason to buy it, not a reason to avoid it. It is lighter than the Ventral, it costs meaningfully less, and the things it gives up are refinements rather than protection. For a rider whose route is rolling rather than furnace hot, the reduced venting is not a problem. The Eye Garage is one of those small features you use every single ride.
POC Axion Race MIPS

If you want the POC coverage argument on dirt without paying Kortal money, this is the entry point. The extended rear shell is the part that earns its keep, because trail crashes load the back and sides of the head far more often than road crashes do. It will not give you the aramid grid of the Tectal or the medical ID chip of the Kortal Race, and most riders will not miss either.

The Aspire is the shape that made POC eyewear reputation: a shield tall enough that you look through glass rather than frame when your head drops. The Clarity tint is the reason to pay for it over a competent budget pair, and it is a real difference rather than a marketing one. Is the premium worth paying
What the money buys

- High visibility colourways and reflective detail treated as a safety feature, not a season trend
- Eyewear with genuinely differentiated Zeiss made lenses and unusually large coverage
- Small thoughtful details like the Eye Garage and the Kortal medical ID chip
What you give up
- Two to three times the price of a certified mass market helmet that clears the same legal bar
- Bulky on the head, and not flattering on everyone, which people do care about
- Not an aero helmet, so a tightly drawn rival will beat a Ventral on watts at speed
- Retention hardware is simple rather than sophisticated compared with Giro or Specialized
- Large eyewear shapes that do not suit narrow faces without careful checking
The honest answer is that the premium buys diminishing but real returns, and the shape of those returns depends entirely on your riding. If you are a commuter doing four miles at 14 mph, the money is better spent on lights and a lock, and a $60 helmet from a mainstream brand is not a compromise. If you descend fast, ride in traffic at speed, or ride trails where the crash you are insuring against loads the back of your head, the extra foam and coverage is the thing you are buying and it is a defensible purchase.
What is not defensible is buying a POC and fitting it badly. A helmet that sits back on the head exposes the forehead, and no amount of shell volume compensates for that. Level on the head, two fingers of gap above the eyebrow, straps forming a V under each ear, dial snug enough that the helmet moves your scalp when you shake your head. Get that right on a $50 helmet and you are better protected than someone wearing a Ventral perched at the wrong angle.
