Best Dirt Bike Helmets
Most helmet mistakes on an electric dirt bike are made at the point of purchase, and the most common one is buying a child a helmet with room to grow into. Here is the whole category, honestly.

Electric dirt bikes have brought a lot of families into off-road riding who have never bought a motocross helmet before, and the category does not explain itself. It looks like a motorcycle helmet with a beak, it has a hole where the visor should be, and half the models on the shelf have a certification sticker while the other half do not. None of that is arbitrary. Every one of those features exists because off-road riding produces a specific set of crashes and a specific set of nuisances.
The other thing worth saying up front: the majority of the money spent in this category goes on helmets for children, and children are the group where getting it wrong costs the most. A youth helmet that is one size too big is the single most common mistake in off-road riding gear, and it is almost always made with good intentions by a parent who does not want to buy another one next season.
What actually makes a helmet a dirt bike helmet
Four features, and each one is a response to a real problem.
A fixed chin bar. Off-road crashes throw riders over the bars into the ground and into their own handlebar. The chin and jaw take a disproportionate share of impacts in that scenario compared with road riding. There is no removable-chin-bar version in serious motocross gear for the same reason there is no removable roll cage in a race car.
A peak, sometimes called a visor. Its first job is deflecting roost, meaning the dirt and stones flung backwards by the rear wheel of the rider in front. Its second is shading low sun on an open track. Peaks are usually designed to break away or bend rather than transmit a snagging force to the neck, which is why they look flimsy and why you should not replace one with a rigid aftermarket part that does not.
A large eye port and no face shield. Goggles seal to the face, keep dust out at the edges, can be fitted with tear-offs or roll-offs when mud arrives, and can be swapped for a clear lens at dusk. A face shield fogs badly at low speed under heavy breathing, which describes most of a technical trail ride. The oversized eye port on a motocross shell exists to accept goggle frames without pressure points.
An extended chin bar and aggressive venting. Off-road riding at 15 mph in first gear produces enormous heat load with almost no airflow. Motocross helmets push the chin bar further forward than a street helmet to open breathing room and to make space for a hydration tube, and they carry far more vent area than a road helmet needs.
DOT, ECE and Snell, and the helmet with no sticker
This section decides whether the helmet you buy is legal for the riding you do, so it is worth reading carefully rather than skimming to the picks.
DOT FMVSS 218
The US federal motor vehicle safety standard for motorcycle helmets. Any helmet worn on a public road in a state with a helmet requirement has to meet it. DOT operates on manufacturer self-certification, with NHTSA doing compliance testing afterwards, which is a weaker enforcement model than a pre-approval scheme but still a real legal obligation. The sticker goes on the back of the shell.
ECE 22.06
The current European regulation, replacing ECE 22.05. It is a type-approval scheme, meaning helmets are tested and approved before sale rather than self-certified, and 22.06 added rotational impact testing, impacts at multiple speeds, and more test points on the shell than its predecessor. It is a stricter regime than DOT on both the test content and the verification process. Many quality motocross helmets carry both marks.
Snell M2020
Voluntary and privately run by the Snell Memorial Foundation. Snell certification involves a higher energy impact test than DOT and requires the manufacturer to submit samples for ongoing random testing. M2020 comes in two variants aligned to the DOT and ECE test methods. It is a genuine additional bar, not a marketing badge, and it usually appears on more expensive helmets.
The helmet with no certification at all
Plenty of youth motocross helmets are sold as closed-course competition use only and carry no DOT mark. This is legal. Off-road competition helmets are not required to meet the road standard because they are not intended for road use, and some manufacturers make choices for weight or shape that a road certification would constrain.
The consequence is straightforward and people miss it constantly. If the machine ever rides on a public road, even a hundred yards of pavement between the trailer and the trailhead, the helmet needs DOT in most jurisdictions. Most electric dirt bikes are not ebikes in any legal sense at all.
Sizing a kids dirt bike helmet
This is the section that matters most, so it gets the most space.
Measure, do not guess by age
Take a soft tailor's tape and run it around the head about one inch above the eyebrows, passing over the widest part at the back of the skull. Keep it level. Take the measurement twice. That circumference in centimetres is the number you shop with, and it is the only number that matters. Age ranges printed on packaging are marketing, and two nine-year-olds can be three sizes apart.

Treat this as the common pattern rather than gospel. Every brand publishes its own chart and they genuinely differ, particularly at the small end. Where a measurement falls between two sizes, most fitters go down rather than up, because cheek pads break in and get looser with use while a shell never gets tighter.
Youth shells are not scaled adult shells
Good youth helmets use a genuinely smaller outer shell, not an adult shell packed with thicker foam. The distinction matters for two reasons. A smaller shell has less rotational leverage on the neck in a crash, and it weighs less. Cheap youth helmets are often built on a single shell size across the whole youth range, using padding thickness to cover the size span, which produces a helmet that is heavier than it needs to be and disproportionately large on the smallest heads. If a brand advertises multiple shell sizes within its youth range, that is a real engineering investment.
The fit check
- Pull the helmet on with the straps held apart. It should be a firm push past the ears, not a slide.
- With the strap undone, the helmet should not rotate more than very slightly when you turn it by hand. The skin of the forehead should move with the liner.
- Cheek pads should press the cheeks noticeably. A new motocross helmet should feel too tight in the cheeks. It will not stay that way.
- Fasten the strap, then try to roll the helmet forward off the back of the head. If it comes off, it is too big, and no amount of strap tightening fixes that.
- Ask the child to wear it for twenty minutes indoors. Hot spots that are mildly annoying at twenty minutes become intolerable at two hours.

Five picks across the range. Prices are approximate bands and move with model years, so treat them as orientation rather than quotes.
Fox Racing V1 Youth

The V1 has been Fox's entry point for long enough that the fit is well understood and pads and parts are easy to find. It sits at the price where you stop paying for graphics and start paying for shell engineering. O'Neal 1 Series Youth
- ABS shell, DOT certified on the standard version
- Basic but complete: peak, vents, removable liner
- The realistic option when the child may lose interest
Heavier than the Fox and less refined inside, and it is still a properly certified full face rather than a toy. This is the right buy for a first season, for a child who might not stick with it, or for a spare that lives in the truck. It is not the right buy for a child riding hard every weekend, mostly because of the weight.
Troy Lee Designs GP Youth

If your child is at the small end of the youth range, weight is the spec to optimise. TLD has built youth shells rather than shrunk adult ones for years, and the difference is felt at the end of a long day rather than in the first ten minutes. Check the certification on the specific version you are buying, since off-road ranges sometimes split into road-legal and competition-only variants.

The MX-9 is the reason Bell dominates recommendation lists at this price. You get a rotational liner and multiple shell sizes at a price where competitors are still using one shell for four sizes. For a teenager on a bigger machine, or a parent riding alongside, this is where the value sits. Pair it with the sizing method above rather than assuming your street helmet size carries over.
Fox Racing V3 RS

Where the money goes at this level is weight, shell count, liner sophistication, and emergency-removal features that matter if a crash requires the helmet to come off without moving the neck. It is a serious piece of equipment and it is genuine overkill for a child on a 24V trail bike. If you ride hard and fast, it earns the difference.

A helmet carrying DOT plus ECE 22.06 is the practical sweet spot: legal on the road here, tested to the stricter European protocol including rotational impacts. Snell on top of that is a bonus rather than a requirement for anyone who is not racing.
Goggles, neck braces, and the weight question
Goggles are not optional
Because a motocross helmet has no face shield, buying one without goggles means buying an incomplete product. Budget 40 to 120 dollars. What you are paying for is a lens that does not distort, a face foam that seals without pressure points, and a strap with silicone beading that stays put on the shell. Anti-fog coatings and a well-ventilated frame are worth more than mirrored lens finishes.
Check goggle and helmet together before committing. The frame should sit inside the eye port without the top edge riding up on the brow of the shell, and the strap should sit in the moulded channel at the back if the helmet has one. Mismatches are common across brands and they produce either a pressure point on the nose or a gap under the goggle where roost gets in.
Neck braces
A neck brace limits how far the helmet can drive the head backwards, forwards, or sideways relative to the torso by giving the helmet edge something to bear against. The engineering rationale is sound and they are standard equipment in professional motocross. For casual trail riding on a small electric bike the argument is weaker, and the brace has to be fitted correctly with compatible body armour to work as intended. Treat it as an upgrade for riders doing jumps and speed, not as a baseline purchase.
Weight and a child's neck
Head mass relative to neck strength is far less favourable in a child than an adult, and it is the underrated spec in this whole category. A 1,400 gram helmet on a small child is a meaningfully different load from a 1,000 gram one, both in a crash and in ordinary fatigue over a long day. Weight is usually listed by the manufacturer and comparing it across two candidates costs you nothing. When the choice is between graphics and grams, buy grams.
Full face against the alternatives
Why a full face motocross helmet
- Chin bar protects the jaw and face, which take a large share of off-road impacts
- Certified against a higher impact energy than any bicycle helmet
- Eye port designed around goggles, which handle mud and dust far better than a shield
- Peak deflects roost and low sun
- Ventilation designed for low-speed, high-effort riding
What it costs you
- Heavier than a bicycle helmet, which matters most for the smallest riders
- Hot and loud, and requires goggles as a second purchase
- Restricts hearing and peripheral awareness more than an open helmet
- Outgrown quickly by children, so the cost repeats
- Overkill for slow neighbourhood riding on a low-powered electric bike
The last point is a real one and worth being honest about. A child pottering around a driveway on a 12 mph electric bike for kids does not need a motocross helmet, and a well-fitted certified bicycle helmet is the appropriate choice there. The line is roughly where jumps, ruts, speed, or other riders enter the picture. Once the bike is being ridden off road at pace, the chin bar stops being optional. How to buy without wasting money
- Measure first, then shop. Circumference in centimetres, taken twice, matched to the specific brand's chart.
- Decide the road question. If the machine will ever be on a public road, DOT is not negotiable.
- Compare weights. Especially for a child. Look for youth-specific shells.
- Buy goggles at the same time and try them together. Mismatches are common and returning one item is easier than living with the pair.
- Skip the graphics premium. On many ranges the same shell is sold in a plain colour for meaningfully less than the current race replica pattern.
- Buy for this season. A child's helmet is a consumable. Plan for it.
