Ride1Up Electric Bikes: The Enthusiast's Budget Brand
Most cheap ebikes win the spec sheet with watt hours and lose the ride with weight. Ride1Up does the opposite on purpose, and that single decision explains the entire range.

Line up the direct-to-consumer ebikes around $1,200 and most of them look the same: fat tyres, a big battery number, a throttle, a rack, and a weight figure in the low seventies that nobody mentions in the marketing. Ride1Up bikes at the same price weigh twenty pounds less, have narrower tyres, smaller batteries and better brakes, and they lose the spec sheet comparison every single time.
That is the whole company, compressed. Founded in San Diego in 2018 and selling direct online with no dealers and no stores, Ride1Up puts its money into the parts that determine how a bike rides rather than the parts that look good in a table. The result is the brand that people who already ride bicycles tend to recommend, and the brand that loses to a fat tyre bike in a side-by-side spec comparison on a marketplace listing.
Whether that is the right trade for you comes down to one question: do you pedal? If you do, this is probably the best value in the budget end of the market. If you plan to ride on the throttle, the smaller batteries will hurt and you should buy something else.
The bet: weight over watt hours
Battery capacity is the easiest number to sell. It is a single figure, it correlates with range, and nobody has to explain it. So budget brands compete on it, and the arms race pushed packs from 500 watt hours to 700 and beyond across the cheap end of the market.
A battery weighs something, though. Roughly speaking, a lithium pack costs you about a pound for every 60 to 90 watt hours, depending on cell chemistry and packaging. Going from a 500 watt hour pack to a 720 watt hour pack adds around three to four pounds of battery, and then the frame has to be built to carry it, and the tyres get wider to smooth out the extra mass, and the whole bike gains ten pounds before anyone notices.
Ride1Up largely refused that trade. Its bikes use packs at the modest end of what rivals fit, keep conventional bicycle geometry rather than moto-style frames, and run normal 27.5 inch or 700c wheels with tyres of a sane width. The bikes that result feel like bicycles with assistance rather than like light electric mopeds, and they are noticeably easier to lift, carry, rack and push when the battery dies.
The cost is exactly what you would expect. Less capacity means less range, and a rider who never pedals will find that out quickly. The lineup, model by model
Core-5: the lightweight budget bike
The Core-5 is the model that built the brand's reputation and it still anchors the range near the $1,000 mark. A rear hub motor in the 500W nominal class, a battery around the 500 watt hour region, normal-sized wheels, a conventional diamond or step-through frame, and a weight in the high forties in pounds rather than the seventy-plus that fat tyre rivals carry at the same price.
That weight difference is the pitch. Twenty pounds is the difference between a bike you can carry up a flight of stairs when you have to and a bike you cannot. The main compromise is the sensor. The Core-5 has historically used cadence sensing, which switches the motor on at a set output once the cranks turn, rather than scaling assistance to your effort. Turris and 700 Series: the mid-range commuters
These two sit next to each other and buyers frequently confuse them. The 700 Series is the bigger, more powerful bike: a rear hub in the 750W nominal class, a substantial battery, a suspension fork, hydraulic disc brakes, integrated lighting, and Class 3 capability, meaning pedal assist up to 28 mph where the law permits it. It is Ride1Up's answer to the mainstream commuter question and the model most likely to suit a longer, faster commute.
The Turris is the tidier one. Similar intent, slightly less of everything except restraint: cleaner cable routing, a neater battery integration, tyres that split the difference between road and rough, and a lower weight. It suits a rider who wants the bike to look like a bike and not like an appliance.
Both are considerably lighter than the fat tyre bikes at the same money, both use hydraulic brakes rather than the cable discs that dominate this price band, and both benefit from the same design philosophy. Ride1Up has offered torque-sensed variants of its mid-range commuters at a premium, so check what the current configuration includes before assuming a sensor type.
Prodigy: the mid-drive nobody else offers at the price
The Prodigy is the most interesting bike Ride1Up makes for anyone who understands drivetrains. It uses a Brose mid-drive motor, mounted at the cranks and driving through the chain and gears rather than spinning the wheel directly. Brose is a German supplier whose motors normally appear on European bikes costing well north of three thousand dollars.
The practical difference is hills. A mid-drive uses the bike's gears, so on a steep climb you shift down and the motor spins at an efficient speed while the gearing multiplies torque at the wheel. A hub motor cannot do that. It has one gear ratio, permanently, and it gets less efficient exactly when the going gets hard. Mid-drives are also torque sensed by nature, because the motor sits in the drivetrain and can measure what you are doing to the cranks. The Prodigy therefore feels like a strong version of you rather than a switch. It also weighs around the low fifties in pounds despite the mid-drive, which is exceptional in this price band. The trade is real. Mid-drives wear chains and cassettes faster because the motor's torque runs through them, and a mid-drive service is a bigger job than swapping a hub wheel. Budget for drivetrain consumables.
The rest of the range
Ride1Up has also sold a lightweight belt-drive single speed, a folding model, a step-through cruiser with a long seat suitable for a passenger, and a full-suspension moto-styled bike aimed squarely at the category covered in our moto-style ebike guide. The CF Racer1, which should not exist at this price
The CF Racer1 is the strangest thing in the catalogue and the reason people who ride road bikes pay attention to this brand at all. It is a full carbon fibre electric road bike, sold in road and gravel configurations, with drop bars, a small hub motor, a small internal battery, and a total weight close to 30 lb.
Understand what that means. The category around it, covered in our electric road bike guide, is dominated by bikes from Specialized, Trek and Orbea that cost four to eight thousand dollars. Those bikes use lightweight mid-drive systems and they are superb. The CF Racer1 undercuts them by thousands of dollars using a simpler approach: a modest hub motor and a small battery, on a carbon frame, aimed at a rider who wants assistance rather than propulsion.
That is exactly the right design for the job. A road cyclist does not want to be pushed along at 20 mph while sitting still. They want the hills flattened and the headwind reduced so they can keep up with a faster group or extend a ride they no longer have the legs for. A small motor and a small battery serve that need at a fraction of the weight and cost.
Its limits are the flip side. A small battery means a modest range, and the assistance is gentle rather than dramatic. It will not carry a heavy rider up a steep climb without effort. Judge it against a normal road bike you can no longer quite keep up on, not against a 750W commuter. The range trade, honestly
Smaller batteries mean less range. There is no clever way around it, so plan for it.
On a Core-5 with a pack in the 500 watt hour region, a rider who pedals steadily at a middle assist level on rolling terrain should expect something in the 25 to 35 mile band. The same bike ridden hard at the top assist level by a heavier rider into a headwind can drop under 20. On the mid-range commuters with larger packs, add roughly a third to those numbers. On the CF Racer1, with its deliberately small battery, think in terms of a supported long ride rather than a commute you never charge for.
Those numbers are worse than what a 720 watt hour fat tyre bike will do on paper, and better than what one will do in practice more often than you would expect, because the lighter bike with narrower tyres uses less energy per mile. Weight and rolling resistance are not free either. A 48 lb bike on 2.1 inch tyres genuinely travels further per watt hour than a 72 lb bike on 4 inch tyres.
The honest summary: if you pedal, the gap between Ride1Up and the big-battery brands is much smaller than the spec sheet implies. If you never pedal, the gap is exactly as large as the spec sheet implies, and you should buy the other bike.
No dealers, and what that means for you
Ride1Up sells direct online. No showrooms, no dealer network, no local shop with a warranty relationship. That is not a gap in the plan, it is the plan: cutting the dealer margin is a large part of how a Brose mid-drive appears on a bike at roughly two thousand dollars.
What it means practically:
- The bike arrives in a box. Mostly assembled, but you fit the front wheel, bars, pedals and saddle, and you are responsible for checking every bolt. Brake rotors rub, headsets come loose in transit and derailleur hangers bend. None of that is hard to fix and all of it will ruin your first month if you do not know to look.
- Support is remote. Phone and email, with parts shipped to you. That works well when the problem is a component and badly when the problem needs a mechanic's hands.
- You need a local shop anyway. Find one that will work on direct-to-consumer ebikes before you buy, not after. Many will, some will not, and knowing which is which changes the maths.
- Conventional parts help enormously here. Because Ride1Up uses normal wheel sizes, standard bottom brackets, Shimano drivetrains and common brake standards, most of the bike can be serviced by any shop with generic parts. Only the electrical system is proprietary.
That last point is worth dwelling on. A bike built from standard bicycle parts can be maintained forever by ordinary mechanics. A bike built around a proprietary frame with a non-standard wheel size and a custom motor mount cannot. Budget an hour at a local shop for a post-assembly safety check whichever brand you buy. It is the cheapest insurance in cycling.

Prices move. Ride1Up discounts at generation changeovers and runs promotions, and it revises models often enough that a spec you read last year may not describe the current bike. Weights vary by frame size and configuration, so check the current specification for the exact model you intend to buy.

If you can reach the price, this is the bike that best demonstrates what the brand is for. A German mid-drive at two thousand dollars is not something the rest of the market offers, and on hilly terrain it is a different class of machine from any hub bike at any price under three thousand.

Take this over the Core-5 if your commute is longer than about eight miles each way, has hills, or if you want the legal 28 mph that Class 3 allows where you ride. Check your local rules first, because Class 3 access to shared paths is restricted in many places.

Buy it if you already ride drop bar bikes and want to keep up with a group or keep riding routes your legs no longer allow. Do not buy it expecting an ebike in the commuter sense. It is a bicycle with a helpful thumb on your back.
Ride1Up against the alternatives
Against Rad and Lectric
Rad Power Bikes and Lectric sell a different product: heavier, more accessorised, throttle-forward bikes with more service infrastructure behind them. They are better choices for a rider who wants utility, wants a throttle, wants to carry passengers or cargo, or wants somewhere to turn when something goes wrong.
Ride1Up is the better choice for a rider who wants a bicycle. There is not much overlap in who should buy which, once you are honest about which of those two descriptions fits you.
Against Aventon
Aventon is the closest direct comparison and the harder call. Aventon pairs torque sensing with a genuine US dealer network at similar prices, which is a real advantage. Ride1Up counters with lower weight, better componentry per dollar, and the Prodigy, which Aventon has no answer to at the price. If having a shop matters, take Aventon. If weight and drivetrain quality matter, take Ride1Up.
Against a bike shop brand
At $3,000 and up you get a Bosch, Shimano or Specialized system, a dealer who stocks parts, and a level of integration Ride1Up does not attempt. Those bikes are better. The Prodigy gets you most of the mid-drive benefit for a third to a half of the price, and for many buyers that is the more sensible purchase even knowing it is not the better bike.

- Longer or faster commute, want legal 28 mph: 700 Series.
