The numbers are usually real. A 750W-class rear hub motor is exactly that, and a 48V pack in the 15Ah to 20Ah range genuinely holds most of a kilowatt hour. The useful question is not whether the headline is a lie, because mostly it is not. The question is whether those three numbers decide how much you enjoy the bike, and they do not. The costs are equally real. Rolling resistance on tarmac is much higher, so a fat tyre bike is slower and eats noticeably more battery at the same speed than a 2.4 inch tyre would. The rotating mass at the rim slows acceleration and makes the steering feel deliberate. And the bike itself is heavy, typically 65 to 80 lb before you add a rider, cargo or a rack.
None of that is a reason to avoid the category. It is a reason to be honest about your route. The step-through case, which is stronger than people think
Step-through frames get filed under "for shorter riders" and that is a bad summary. The real argument is about what happens when the bike is heavy and loaded. Swinging a leg over the back of a 70 lb bike that has panniers and a rack on it is an awkward, high-effort movement, and it is the movement most likely to result in a drop. A low top tube converts that into a step forward.
The people who benefit include anyone with restricted hip or knee mobility, anyone carrying loads on a rear rack, anyone who rides in work clothes, and anyone who has to mount on a slope or in traffic. That is most riders, not a niche. The frame does pay a stiffness penalty because a low top tube is structurally weaker, which is why good step-through ebikes use a large diameter downtube and a reinforced junction. Look at the downtube on the photographs. If it looks like a scaffolding pole, that is a good sign.

Brakes against bike weight
A fat tyre ebike with a big battery weighs 65 to 80 lb empty. Add a 200 lb rider and a loaded rack and you are asking the brakes to stop close to 300 lb from 20 mph, roughly double the system mass of a rider on a normal bicycle. Kinetic energy scales with mass, so the brakes have double the work.
Three things decide whether they are up to it. Hydraulic beats mechanical, because hydraulic gives more force for less hand effort and self-adjusts as pads wear. Rotor diameter matters more than most buyers realise: 180mm sheds heat and generates leverage far better than 160mm, and on a heavy bike in hills 180mm front is the sensible floor. Four-piston calipers push more pad area than two-piston ones and show up on brands taking the weight seriously. Cadence sensing instead of torque sensing
This one line changes the character of a bike more than a hundred watts of motor does. A cadence sensor notices that the cranks are turning and applies a preset power level. A torque sensor measures how hard you are pushing and scales the assist to match. Cadence feels like a switch: pedal, pause, surge. Torque feels like unusually strong legs. Almost everything under about $1,200 uses cadence sensing, and value brands often stay with it well above that. Unnamed electronics
Count the brand names on the components list. On a well-specified bike near $1,500 you expect a few: a named derailleur, a named brake, named tyres. Where the sheet says only "hydraulic disc brake" with no maker attached, the maker is the answer to a question the brand chose not to answer. The named part is not automatically better, but the name buys you a parts channel. Any shop can replace a Shimano derailleur. Suspension forks that are decorative
Cheap coil forks on heavy bikes tend to have very little usable travel, no meaningful damping and a lockout that is the only setting worth using. On a fat tyre bike this matters less than it would elsewhere, because the tyres are doing most of the work. Treat the fork as a bonus rather than a feature you are paying for, and do not let its presence tip a decision.
Five things to verify before you order
- Model-specific certification. Ask for the certificate number covering your exact model. UL 2271 covers the battery pack alone. UL 2849 covers the whole electrical system: pack, charger, controller and motor together. A brand claiming "UL certified batteries" may be describing one model in the catalogue.
- Battery replacement availability and price. Ask what a replacement pack costs today for the model you are buying, and whether packs are still stocked for models the brand sold three years ago. That second answer tells you more than the first. What a replacement really costs works through the arithmetic.
- Cell supplier. "Which cells are in this pack" is a fair question. Brands using Samsung, LG or Panasonic cells say so loudly, because it costs them money. Brands that do not use them list a capacity and stop.
- Rotor diameter and caliper type. Not "disc brakes". The millimetre figure and whether it is hydraulic.
