Gazelle Electric Bikes: Built for Twenty Years, Not for a Spec Sheet

A Dutch city bike is designed around a question American ebikes rarely ask: what will this thing be like on a wet Tuesday in its eleventh year?

Royal Dutch Gazelle has been building bicycles in Dieren, in the Netherlands, since 1892. That is not trivia, it is the explanation for everything odd about the product. A company that has spent well over a century supplying a country where the bicycle is genuine transport, ridden year round in rain and salt by people in ordinary clothes, ends up building a fundamentally different machine from one that started selling online in 2018.

The difference is not quality in the vague sense. It is the design brief. An American direct-to-consumer ebike is optimised to look like good value on a product page: watt hours, nominal watts, claimed range, included accessories, a low number at checkout. A Gazelle is optimised for a fleet of parts that will still be working after a decade of being left outside, and it accepts a much higher price and a much higher weight to get there.

Whether that trade is worth it to you is the real question in this guide, and the answer is genuinely not always yes. If you ride ten miles a month on dry weekends, you are paying for durability you will never consume. If you commute daily in a wet climate, the arithmetic looks very different.

A different design brief

Ask what a bike is for and the Dutch answer is a boring one: it is for getting to work, to the shops and to school, every day, in whatever weather turns up, wearing whatever you were already wearing. Nothing about that brief rewards a low weight or a big motor. It rewards parts that never need attention.

This shows up as a series of choices that look strange on a spec sheet and obvious after a winter. Chains get enclosed so they do not need cleaning and do not oil your trousers. Gears go inside the hub where road salt cannot reach them. Lights get wired permanently to a dynamo so there is no battery to be flat and nothing to remove when you park. Racks are welded and rated instead of bolted on afterwards. The frame is coated properly because it will spend its life outdoors.

None of that appears in a comparison chart against a $1,400 fat tyre bike, and all of it is why one bike is still in service at year fifteen and the other is in a garage with a dead battery and a seized derailleur. That is the actual argument, and it deserves to be made honestly rather than romantically: durability is a feature you only collect if you ride enough to need it.

What Dutch construction actually means, part by part

Enclosed chain or belt

A full chaincase seals the chain in a plastic or metal housing. It stays lubricated, it stays out of the rain, it does not fling grit at your ankles, and chains inside one routinely last several times as long as an exposed chain. The cost is that a chain change is a longer job and the case adds weight.

The alternative Gazelle uses on some models is a carbon belt, which needs no lubrication at all, does not stretch, does not rust and runs silently. A belt requires a frame with a split in the rear triangle and an internally geared hub, which is why it appears alongside the other Dutch hardware rather than on its own. Internally geared hubs and continuously variable hubs

Rather than a derailleur hanging in the spray behind the wheel, gears live inside a sealed rear hub. You can shift while stationary, which matters enormously in city riding when you arrive at a light in the wrong gear. There is no derailleur to bend, no hanger to snap, and no exposed cassette collecting grit.

Some models use a stepped hub gear with fixed ratios and some use a continuously variable hub that sweeps smoothly through its range with no steps at all. The continuously variable type is very pleasant in traffic and slightly less efficient than a chain and derailleur, which is a fair trade on a bike with a motor. Dynamo lighting

A hub dynamo generates power from the front wheel and feeds lights that are bolted to the bike and wired through the frame. On an ebike, lighting is often run from the main battery instead, which achieves the same thing. The point either way is that the lights are permanent, aimed properly, and always there. Racks, guards and locks

Gazelle racks are designed as part of the bike rather than added later, and they carry meaningful loads rather than the token 20 lb rating you find on a bolt-on. Full-length guards keep the spray off you and off the drivetrain. Many European models come with an integrated frame lock that immobilises the rear wheel with a key, which is not a substitute for a proper lock but removes the entire category of opportunist theft while you buy milk. Upright geometry

You sit up on these bikes. Swept bars, a tall head tube, a saddle set for comfort rather than power. This puts weight on your seat rather than your hands and puts your eyes at the height of a car driver's, which is a safety feature disguised as a comfort feature. It also costs you aerodynamics, which is why nobody rides a Dutch bike fast into a headwind by choice. Why Gazelle uses Bosch

Nearly all Gazelle electric bikes are built around Bosch mid-drive systems. The reason is consistent with everything else about the brand: Bosch is the drive system with the longest track record, the widest dealer diagnostic network, and the best odds of parts still being available years from now.

Mechanically, a mid-drive puts the motor at the bottom bracket and sends power through the chain or belt and the gears, so the motor benefits from the gearing exactly as your legs do. That is why mid-drives climb better than hub motors of the same nominal output and why the weight sits low and central instead of hanging off the rear wheel. Bosch offers tiers rather than one motor. Gentler tuned systems suit upright city bikes and are quieter and easier on the drivetrain. Higher-output systems suit trekking bikes and hills. The fast tier is tuned for higher assisted speeds, which in the United States makes the bike a Class 3, with the legal consequences that carries on paths and trails. The dealer network is part of what you are buying Bosch systems are diagnosed with manufacturer software at authorised shops, and Gazelle sells through dealers rather than direct. That is an ongoing advantage rather than a one-time one: someone within driving distance can read a fault code, update firmware and order a genuine battery. The range, by job

Gazelle sells a large catalogue in Europe and a narrower selection in North America, and model names come and go. The four lines below are the ones most likely to be in front of you. Check the current site for exactly which generation and drive tier is fitted before ordering.

Ultimate: the premium all-rounder

The Ultimate range is the flagship: the highest levels of integration, the better Bosch tiers, and the most complete hardware. It is the Gazelle that most closely resembles a modern European trekking ebike rather than a traditional Dutch roadster, with a slightly more forward riding position than the classic models and a build aimed at longer distances.

Medeo: the accessible trekking bike

Medeo is the more affordable line, built to the same philosophy with fewer of the expensive extras. It is where most first-time Gazelle buyers land, and it is the model that answers the objection that these bikes are unaffordable. You give up some integration and some drive tier, and you keep the frame quality, the geometry and the Bosch system.

Arroyo: the classic upright

Arroyo is the traditional Dutch city bike with the motor added: very upright, low step-through, comfort-first. The Eclipse is the performance end of the Gazelle catalogue, typically built around the higher-speed Bosch tier for Class 3 riding, with a sportier position and a build aimed at riders covering real commuting mileage at road speeds. It is the Gazelle for someone with a twelve mile each-way commute who would otherwise be shopping athletic European trekking bikes.

If you are going to spend Gazelle money, the Ultimate is where the philosophy is expressed most completely. It is the model that makes the twenty-year argument credible, and it is the one whose parts list has the fewest compromises in it.

The Medeo exists to answer the price objection, and it does. You are still getting a mid-drive, a serviceable dealer-supported system and a frame designed for daily use. Buy this rather than stretching to a flagship you cannot comfortably afford.

Cost per year, not cost per bike

The fair way to compare a Gazelle against a cheap direct-to-consumer bike is not the sticker. It is what the bike costs you per year of service, including the parts it eats.

Run the arithmetic yourself with your own numbers, but the shape of it looks like this. Take a $4,000 Gazelle, assume twelve years of daily use, and add one battery replacement somewhere in the middle at several hundred dollars plus routine servicing. You land somewhere around $400 a year. Take a $1,300 online ebike, assume it gives you four or five good years before the battery, the controller or the frame hardware makes replacement more sensible than repair, and you land in a broadly similar place per year.

That result surprises people who expect the expensive bike to win outright. It does not win outright, and anyone claiming otherwise is selling something. What the expensive bike wins on is everything the arithmetic does not capture: fewer failures, less downtime, no seized parts in February, parts availability years later, and a resale value that is real rather than theoretical. What the cheap bike wins on is the money staying in your account until you know whether you will actually ride.

Two things move the calculation decisively. The first is mileage: the more you ride, the more the durable bike pays. The second is climate, because salt, rain and grit are what kill exposed drivetrains, and they are exactly what a chaincase and a hub gear are for. Price the battery before you buy, not after A proprietary in-frame battery is a consumable with a life measured in charge cycles, and a Bosch replacement pack is not cheap. The advantage here is that Bosch packs are widely available from a large dealer network rather than from one company that may not exist in six years. Fit, weight and the honest downsides

The weight is the first thing to be honest about. A fully equipped Gazelle is somewhere in the region of 55 to 65 lb, and that is a consequence of the build rather than a fault. It rides beautifully because of it: heavy bikes feel planted and calm, and the motor removes the penalty when you are moving. The penalty appears when you are not moving. The fit issue is the second. Dutch frames are drawn for the tallest population in Europe, and it shows in long head tubes, tall standover on diamond frames and a reach that can leave a shorter rider stretched even on a low-step. The mitigations are real: Gazelle offers multiple frame sizes across its lines, the low-step frames solve standover completely, and a shorter stem or a swept-back bar recovers a lot of reach. But this is a range you should sit on before buying if a dealer is reachable, and if you are under about 5ft 3in you should treat frame size as the first filter rather than the last.

Finally, the comparison shoppers should actually run. Against an American ebike at half the price, a Gazelle looks indefensible on paper and defensible in the eleventh winter. Against other bikes built to the same brief, it is a genuine competition: Electra comes at comfort from a Californian direction with a very different aesthetic, and Momentum offers a similar city-bike philosophy through a large manufacturer's dealer network. All three are asking you to buy a bike you will still own in a decade. Gazelle just has the longest evidence that it works.

Why are Gazelle electric bikes so expensive?
Because the bike is specified to survive twenty years of daily riding in bad weather rather than to win a spec-sheet comparison. They can be, but you have to shop deliberately. Dutch frames are drawn around a tall average rider, and even low-step frames can put the bars high and far away. Gazelle offers several frame sizes across its ranges, and the smallest low-step frames work for many riders in the 5ft to 5ft 4in range. Is Royal Dutch Gazelle the same company as Gazelle?
Yes. Koninklijke Gazelle, translated as Royal Dutch Gazelle, is the full name of the manufacturer founded in Dieren in the Netherlands in 1892. The Royal designation is a Dutch honour granted to long-established companies. It is now part of the Pon group, which owns a number of well-known bicycle brands, and it still builds bikes at Dieren.
