Ebike Locks and Theft Prevention

A lock does not make your bike unstealable. It buys minutes against specific tools, and it makes you a worse target than the bike beside you. Everything else follows from that.

Ebikes get stolen at higher rates than ordinary bicycles, and they cost several times as much to replace. Both halves of that sentence change the calculation. A lock that would be sensible protection for a $400 hybrid is underinvestment on a $2,500 ebike, and the ten dollar cable that came coiled in the box is worse than nothing because it produces confidence without protection.

The reasoning is not complicated once you accept the premise that no lock is a barrier. Locks are timers. Each one buys a specific number of minutes against a specific set of tools, in exchange for weight, money and inconvenience. The job is to buy more minutes than a thief is willing to spend in the place you are parking, which is a very different problem in a supermarket bay at midday than outside a station overnight.

The short version Buy a Sold Secure Gold or Diamond U-lock, sized so there is barely any free space inside the shackle. Add a second lock of a different type. Lock the frame to something that is genuinely fixed, not just a wheel. Take the battery with you where you can. Record the serial number, register the bike, hide a tracker. And read your insurance schedule before you need it, because contents cover usually falls short.

Why the calculation is different for an ebike

Three things separate ebike theft from bicycle theft.

Value density. A mid-market ebike sits in the same replacement bracket as a used car, and the value is concentrated in parts that come off quickly. The battery alone can be a quarter of the bike's price, which our battery replacement guide covers in detail. There is a real resale market for packs, motors, displays and chargers separate from the market for whole bikes.

Escape speed. A thief who gets your ebike moving is gone at 20 mph or better without pedalling, which changes the geometry of anyone chasing or reporting them. On a Class 3 ebike assisting to 28 mph, that gap opens faster still. It also means a bike secured only by a wheel lock or a passcode can be lifted into a van and dealt with elsewhere in ten seconds.

Weight cuts both ways. A 60 lb bike is harder to carry off, which genuinely helps, and it also means owners are less willing to bring it indoors, take it up stairs, or wrestle it into a hallway. The bikes that get stolen are disproportionately the ones parked where they were convenient to park.

None of this makes ebikes unownable. It means the security budget should scale with the bike. A useful rule of thumb, and it is a rough one, is to spend somewhere around ten percent of the bike's value on locks. On a typical build that lands you at one serious lock plus a secondary. On a high-end machine it justifies the heaviest thing you are willing to carry.

Lock ratings decoded, and why brand numbers are useless

This is the part buyers get wrong most often. Nearly every lock manufacturer prints a security number on the packaging, usually 1 to 10 or 1 to 15. Those scales are internal marketing. A 9 from one brand and a 9 from another have no defined relationship, because each company sets its own scale to spread its own range across it. Ignore them entirely.

Two independent schemes exist, and both put locks in front of testers with real tools.

Sold Secure

Run in the UK by the Master Locksmiths Association, Sold Secure tests locks to a published standard under attack by a defined toolkit for a defined time, and awards a tier. From lowest to highest: Bronze, Silver, Gold and Diamond. The scheme has been revised over the years, and there are now separate categories for pedal cycles and for powered cycles, so a lock may carry a rating specific to ebikes.

Treat the tiers as levels of tool commitment rather than as exact minute counts, since the tool list matters as much as the clock.

Bronze
Resists an opportunist with basic hand tools. Suitable for very short stops in low-risk places, or as a secondary lock only.
Silver
Resists a more determined attack with better hand tools. A reasonable minimum for a cheap bike, not for an ebike.
Gold
Resists a dedicated attack with a broad toolkit including leverage and cutting tools. The practical minimum for an ebike, and what most insurers name.
Diamond
The highest tier, tested against the most aggressive toolset. Heavy and expensive. What you want for high-value bikes or long stays in cities.

ART

The Dutch foundation Stichting ART runs the other scheme most worth knowing, rating locks from one to five stars. It is the standard Dutch insurers write into policies, and because the Netherlands has an enormous theft problem and an enormous cycling population, ART approval is genuinely hard-earned. Two stars is typically the floor for bicycle insurance there, with three or more expected for higher-value machines and mopeds. If you see an ART rating alongside Sold Secure, it is corroboration rather than a competing claim.

The insurance link is the practical reason to care Many specialist bike policies require a specific rating, require the lock to have been used, and require the bike to have been locked to an immovable object. Claims get declined on exactly this point. Keep the receipt for the lock as well as for the bike, because insurers ask for both.

What a lock actually buys you

Every lock has a defeat method, and the honest way to think about a rating is as a rough time cost for the cheapest method that works.

Bolt croppers defeat unhardened shackles and most chains under about 10 mm in a few seconds and silently. Hardened steel of 13 mm or more resists them meaningfully. A small hydraulic bottle jack, inserted into the free space inside a U-lock shackle and pumped, spreads the lock until it fails, and it does this almost silently, which is why free space inside the shackle is a design flaw in how you use the lock rather than a flaw in the lock. Leverage attacks with a scaffold pole through a shackle or a chain link work the same way.

And then there is the angle grinder. A cordless grinder with a decent disc cuts through nearly any shackle in a time measured in tens of seconds to a couple of minutes. Nothing sold defeats it outright. A small number of locks are engineered specifically to fight it, using abrasion-resistant composite layers that chew up the cutting disc so the thief needs several discs and several minutes, and those locks are heavy and expensive. What actually deters a grinder is the noise, the shower of sparks, and whether anyone is watching. That is a location decision, not a purchasing one.

The consistent professional advice is to carry two locks of different types, and the logic is worth spelling out. A thief carrying bolt croppers cannot defeat a hardened U-lock. A thief carrying a grinder needs time and tolerates noise. Two different lock types mean one tool is never enough, and the extra trip back to the van is often the whole deterrent.

Size the U-lock down, not up. A smaller shackle is stronger, lighter, and leaves less room for a jack. Buy the smallest one that still reaches around your frame and the rack you actually use, then use that specific rack.

Technique beats the lock

You can defeat a Diamond lock by using it badly, and you can get years of trouble-free parking out of a Gold lock used well. Most stolen bikes were locked, just locked wrongly.

Check the thing you are locking to

The rack is part of your security and nobody inspects it. Look for a stand that is bolted through concrete with the bolt heads intact and not visibly tampered with. Walk past racks where a section has been cut and taped back together, which is a known trick, and racks whose ground bolts are missing. Avoid signposts you could lift the whole lock up and over, sometimes called a sucker pole. Avoid scaffolding, wooden fences, plastic bollards, and small trees. The rule is simple: never lock to something weaker than your lock.

Lock the frame, not just a wheel

A lock through a front wheel alone leaves the thief a bike and a spare wheel. The U-lock must capture the frame and the fixed object. The efficient version, sometimes credited to Sheldon Brown, is to put a small U-lock through the rear triangle inside the rear wheel and around the rack: because the rear wheel passes through the closed loop of the frame, the wheel cannot be removed without cutting the frame, and both are secured with one lock. Use the second lock or a locking skewer on the front wheel.

Fill the space and mind the orientation

  • Leave as little free space inside the shackle as possible, so a bottle jack has nothing to bite on. Fill it with frame, wheel and rack.
  • Keep the lock off the ground. A lock resting on concrete gives a thief an anvil to hammer against and a stable base to lean a grinder into. Lock high, ideally around the top tube height.
  • Face the keyhole downward, which keeps dirt and water out of the cylinder and makes picking and drilling more awkward.
  • Do not leave the bike overnight in public, ever, if you can avoid it. Time available is the single biggest variable a thief has.
  • Park among other bikes, near foot traffic and cameras. The goal is being a harder target than the bike beside yours, not being impregnable.

Do not neglect home

A large share of ebike thefts are from garages, sheds and communal bike stores. Owners are meticulous in town and careless at home, where the bike stands unlocked behind a door secured by a hardware-store padlock. Fit a ground anchor into the concrete floor, lock the bike to it with a hardened chain, and treat the shed or garage door as a second layer. Upgrade the shed hasp and hinges, which are usually the weak point rather than the padlock, and keep the bike out of sight of the street and of anyone delivering to your door.

The battery, the display and the removable parts

A removable battery is simultaneously a theft target and a theft deterrent, and both facts are worth acting on.

As a target: it is compact, valuable, has a live resale market, and its lock is a low-security key cylinder designed to stop it falling out on bumps rather than to resist attack. Do not rely on it. As a deterrent: a bike with no battery cannot simply be ridden away, cannot be demonstrated to a buyer, and is a less appealing grab. Taking the pack with you converts an opportunistic ride-away into a job requiring a van.

The trade-off is carrying five to eight pounds around, which is why frame-integrated batteries have quietly become a security compromise: they are much harder to steal separately, and you cannot take them inside with you either. Neither approach is wrong, but know which one you have chosen.

Beyond the battery, the quick wins are small.

  • Take the display off if it slides out of a rail, and take the lights.
  • Replace quick-release skewers on wheels and the seatpost clamp with bolt-up or keyed locking versions. This also stops the saddle walking off, which we mention in our saddles guide for a reason.
  • Set the system passcode if your bike has one. Many drive systems support a PIN or app pairing that disables assist. It does nothing against someone stripping the bike for parts, and it does stop a joyride and makes casual resale harder.
  • Do not leave anything on the rack you would mind losing, including panniers and the charger.

Taking the battery with you

  • Removes the highest-value single component from the target
  • Makes riding the bike away impossible without a replacement pack
  • Lets you charge at the destination rather than at home
  • Reduces the incentive for a quick grab in a busy place

Leaving it on the bike

  • Five to eight pounds to carry and somewhere to put it
  • The mount and contacts sit exposed to weather while you are away
  • Does nothing to protect the frame, wheels or drivetrain
  • Not an option at all on integrated down tube packs

Trackers, serial numbers and getting it back

Recovery rates for stolen bikes are poor, and almost all of the improvement available comes from work you do before the theft.

Record the serial number now. It is usually stamped into the frame under the bottom bracket, sometimes on the head tube or the rear dropout. Photograph it. Without it, police cannot match a recovered bike to you, and recovered bikes are routinely auctioned because nobody can prove ownership.

Register the bike. Bike Index and Project 529 are free, widely used, and searched by police departments and by second-hand buyers. Registration is also what makes a stolen bike harder to sell, since a careful buyer will check, and it is the same check you should be running when you shop for a used electric bike yourself.

Photograph the bike properly. Both sides, the drivetrain, the cockpit, and close-ups of anything unique: a scratch, an aftermarket part, a sticker. Identification is easier from a distinguishing mark than from a model name.

Mark the components. A UV pen or a security marking kit on the frame, seatpost, stem and wheels makes parts traceable and slightly less saleable. Cheap and takes ten minutes.

Hide a tracker. Two categories, with different failure modes. Bluetooth tags like an AirTag are cheap, last about a year on a coin cell, and locate the bike by borrowing the phones of strangers passing nearby, so they work well in dense areas and poorly in rural ones. Their known limitation is that anti-stalking features may notify a thief carrying a compatible phone after several hours. Cellular GPS trackers report from anywhere on their own connection but need a subscription and regular charging, or wiring into the main battery. Either way, hide it where a thief will not look: inside the steerer tube, under the saddle, inside a rear light housing, or behind a bottle cage mount.

Never go and get it yourself A tracker location is information for the police, not an address to visit. People have been badly hurt confronting bike thieves, and a location on a phone is not evidence of who is in the building. Report it, provide the serial number, the registration record and the tracker data, and let them act.

Insurance, honestly

The most common assumption is that home contents cover already handles this. Frequently it does not, and the gap only becomes visible at claim time.

Four things to check in your own policy schedule, by name.

  1. The single-article limit. Contents policies typically cap any one item at a figure that can sit below an ebike's price, unless the item is specified separately and the premium adjusted. Some policies apply a separate bicycle sub-limit that is lower still.
  2. Away from home. Standard contents cover often protects belongings only inside the home. Theft from a rack in town is usually covered only under a personal possessions or unspecified items extension, which is optional and costs extra.
  3. Whether ebikes are excluded. Some insurers class powered cycles as motor vehicles and exclude them outright, and some draw the line by wattage or top assisted speed. This is worth an explicit question, because the answer varies by insurer rather than by law.
  4. Lock and security conditions. A named lock standard, a requirement to lock to an immovable object, and a limit on how long the bike may be left unattended are common. Failing any of them voids the claim.

If those checks come back badly, a standalone bicycle or ebike policy is usually the answer. Specialist cover typically adds accidental damage, theft of the battery, cover while the bike is on a car rack or in transit, and often third-party liability, which matters more on a heavy fast bike than people assume. Expect an annual premium in the region of a few percent of the bike's value, varying widely with where you live and where the bike is stored.

Two practical notes. Ask whether settlement is new-for-old or depreciated, since a depreciated payout on a three year old ebike may not buy a comparable replacement. And keep the purchase receipt, the lock receipt and the serial number together in one place, because you will be asked for all three at once and never at a convenient moment. Risk is dominated by two variables: how long the bike is there, and how many people are around. Match the effort to those.

The one structural fix worth mentioning is the bike itself. A folding electric bike can come inside with you, into the office, into the café, onto the train, which sidesteps the entire problem in a way no lock can match. At the other end of the scale, an electric cargo bike is expensive, unmistakable and impossible to bring indoors, so it needs a genuinely secure home storage plan before you buy rather than after.

Two smaller habits to close on. Lubricate the lock cylinder a couple of times a year with a light oil, because a lock that has spent a winter in road salt will jam at the worst possible moment, which is one of the seasonal jobs alongside the rest of wet-weather ebike care. And spend a few minutes on the small hardware in parts and accessories, since locking skewers and a bolt-up seat clamp close off the easy losses that a good lock does nothing about.
