Ariel Rider occupies a specific slot in the American ebike market: moto-styled machines, dual crown forks, banana seats, and enough power that the word "bike" starts doing a lot of work. The Grizzly is the flagship and the reason most people arrive here, because a dual motor, dual battery machine with all-wheel drive is not a thing most brands attempt.
It is also a useful case study, because it makes the legal question unavoidable in a way that a 750W commuter never does. A machine with two motors is not a low-speed electric bicycle under federal law, is not covered by any of the three classes, and is therefore not permitted anywhere a bicycle is permitted by virtue of being a bicycle. That is worth being direct about before discussing anything else, not because these machines are wrong to want but because buying one under a misunderstanding is expensive.

What Ariel Rider builds
Ariel Rider is a US-based direct-to-consumer brand that has been selling since the mid 2010s, and its output has converged on one idea: bicycles that look and behave like small motorcycles. The house style is a low, long frame with a moto silhouette, a wide banana or bench seat, 20 by 4 inch tyres, a dual crown fork, moto-style bars, and a battery placed to look like a fuel tank or an engine case rather than to look like a bicycle component.
Underneath, the engineering choices follow from the styling. A 52V electrical system rather than the more common 48V, which raises available power at a given current. Large-capacity batteries, and on the flagship models two of them. Hub motors rather than a mid-drive, because a hub motor takes high power without destroying a bicycle drivetrain and because there is no meaningful pedalling happening at these speeds anyway. Suspension at both ends, since the mass and speed demand it.

The Grizzly and what two motors actually do
The Grizzly's defining feature is a motor in each wheel, fed by two batteries, on a 52V system. That is an unusual architecture and it produces three effects worth understanding separately.
Traction. This is the underrated one. All-wheel drive on a bicycle-sized machine is genuinely useful on loose ground. On sand, a single rear motor spins the back tyre and digs a hole; with the front wheel also driving, the machine pulls itself forward instead of digging. The same applies on snow, wet grass, and loose gravel climbs. Acceleration. Two motors pulling together on a 52V system produce a rate of acceleration that has no equivalent in the legal ebike world. This is the sensation the marketing sells and it is not exaggerated. It is also the thing most likely to get an inexperienced rider hurt, because the brakes and tyres were derived from bicycle parts and the acceleration was not.
Capacity. Two batteries mean roughly twice the stored energy, which is what makes the range figures possible at all. It also means twice the charging time on a single charger, twice the weight of cells, and twice the eventual replacement cost.
The trade nobody advertises is efficiency. Two motors drawing simultaneously do not double your speed; they roughly double your consumption for a much smaller gain, because aerodynamic drag rises with the cube of speed. A dual motor machine ridden on both motors at 30 mph is burning energy at a rate that makes both packs disappear quickly. The legal position, stated plainly
Federal law defines a low-speed electric bicycle as a two or three wheeled vehicle with functional pedals, a motor of less than 750W, and a top motor-powered speed of 20 mph on level ground with a 170 lb rider. Meeting that definition is what keeps a product regulated as a bicycle rather than as a motor vehicle. A machine with two motors whose combined output is well beyond 750W does not meet it, and the pedals do not change that.
The three-class system used by roughly forty states describes where compliant bikes may ride, and all three classes carry the same 750W ceiling. A dual motor Grizzly is not Class 1, Class 2 or Class 3. It is not "Class 4" either, because no such class exists. The practical consequences are concrete rather than theoretical:
- No bike lanes and no multi-use paths. Access to those is granted to bicycles, and this is not one.
- Road use is jurisdiction-dependent and usually requires registration. Most states would classify a machine like this as a moped or a motor-driven cycle, which brings licensing, registration, and insurance requirements.
- Registration is often impossible anyway. Mopeds and motorcycles generally need a VIN, DOT-approved lighting, mirrors, a horn, and a certificate of origin. - Insurance sits in a gap. Bicycle liability coverage may not respond to a motor vehicle, and motor vehicle policies need a registered vehicle. That gap is a real financial exposure in a collision.
None of this makes the machines illegal to own or to ride on private land, and plenty of owners ride them on quiet backroads without ever being questioned. It does mean the risk is yours and it is not small. Weight
A dual motor, dual battery machine with a dual crown fork and 4 inch tyres lands around 100 lb. That is a number with consequences beyond the spec sheet. It cannot go on a standard bike rack, it cannot be carried up a flight of stairs by one person, it cannot be lifted into a truck bed without a ramp, and if it goes over on you at a stop it is going down. Storage and transport become planning problems rather than afterthoughts.
Range under throttle
Range figures for machines like this assume low assist and moderate speed, which is not how anyone rides them. Hold 30 mph on both motors and the consumption is several times what the same machine uses at 15 mph, because drag scales with the cube of velocity. Riders commonly find that hard riding delivers well under half the advertised figure. The two-battery architecture is what keeps that usable at all; on a single-battery machine the same riding style would be untenable.
Brakes and tyres doing motorcycle work
Ariel Rider fits hydraulic disc brakes with large rotors, which is the correct decision, and they are still bicycle brakes being asked to stop a 100 lb machine plus rider from 35 mph repeatedly. Expect pad life measured in a fraction of what a normal ebike gets, expect rotors to need replacing rather than just pads, and expect brake fade on long descents. Direct-to-consumer means no dealer. Ariel Rider is better placed than most in this segment because it is an established US company with a parts operation, but the practical reality is that a local bike shop may decline to work on a 100 lb machine with proprietary dual motor wiring, and motorcycle shops will not touch a bicycle. Budget for doing your own work and for waiting on shipped parts.

The closest thing in the range to a conventional bike: a step-through commuter-oriented frame with a single motor and a more modest specification. It is aimed at riders who want the brand's styling on something they can actually use for errands. D-Class and the dual motor siblings

If you want the aesthetic and the performance without the weight and the charging burden of two packs, this is the one. Losing the front motor costs you the all-wheel traction, which matters on sand and matters very little on tarmac. For most buyers it is the better machine and it is materially cheaper.

Who these actually suit
There is a real buyer for a Grizzly and it is not a commuter. It is someone with private land, a beach that permits vehicle access, forestry tracks, or a rural setting where the ride starts and ends at a driveway and never touches a bike path. For that rider, the all-wheel traction and the acceleration are worth the weight, the range, and the legal ambiguity, and there is no compliant machine that substitutes.
There is also a real buyer for the X-Class, which is someone who wants a moto-styled machine for backroad and neighbourhood riding, accepts that it is not a bicycle, and would rather have one battery to charge and 15 fewer pounds to wrestle.
The buyer who should not be here is the one who wants a fast commuter. If your route involves bike lanes, paths, or any enforcement, buying a machine that cannot legally use them is the wrong solution to that problem. A Class 3 ebike assisting to 28 mph is legal on roads and in on-street bike lanes across most of the country and will do the commuting job better in every practical respect.
