Search "stealth bomber electric bike" and you get thousands of results that all look roughly the same: a matte black full-suspension frame, a slab-sided battery box where a bicycle would have a triangle, fat off-road tyres, moto bars, and a set of pedals that look like an afterthought. Most of those results are not stealth bombers. They are copies of one, sold under whatever brand name the seller registered that quarter.

The actual Stealth Bomber is a specific product from a specific company, and knowing that changes how you read every listing in this category. What follows is the history, then the part that matters more: a practical framework for evaluating any machine sold under this name, because the badge on the frame tells you nothing about whether the brakes will stop it.

The original: Stealth Electric Bikes and the B-52 Bomber

Stealth Electric Bikes is an Australian company that has been building high-power off-road electric bikes since the late 2000s, which makes it older than most of the ebike industry. The B-52 Bomber is its flagship, and it arrived at a time when the rest of the market was arguing about whether 250W was enough for a commuter.

What made it notable was not the power figure. It was that the whole machine was designed around the power figure. The frame is a purpose-built structure rather than a mountain bike frame with a battery strapped on. The suspension uses long-travel components chosen for a machine that weighs far more than a bicycle and travels far faster. The brakes are sized for the mass and speed rather than borrowed from a trail bike. The wheels, bearings, and pivots are specified for motorcycle-scale loads. Critically, the pedal drivetrain was kept functional rather than symbolic, which was both a design choice and, in some markets, a legal one.

Stealth has built several models over the years across a range of power levels, from lower-output pedal-focused bikes up to the Bomber. Figures on the current range change, so check Stealth's own published specifications rather than a reseller listing or a decade-old forum post. What matters for this article is the shape of the thing: a small manufacturer building an expensive, coherent machine that treated a high-power electric bike as an engineering problem rather than a parts-bin exercise.

The price reflected that. These have always sat at the top of the market, in the range where you could buy a used motorcycle instead, and that gap is exactly what created the copies.

How Stealth Bomber became a category name

Distinctive industrial design plus a high price is an invitation. The Bomber's silhouette is unmistakable and, unlike a patented drivetrain, a silhouette is cheap to approximate. Within a few years of the design becoming well known online, manufacturers in China were producing frames with similar proportions, similar battery boxes, and similar bodywork, sold to anyone who wanted to put a brand name on them.

That is why you now see the same frame appearing under a dozen different names across marketplaces, direct-to-consumer sites, and social media ads. In many cases the brand is a trading name attached to a single container of bikes, and the underlying frame came from a factory that sells the same product to every other name in the list. This is not a conspiracy; it is how the white-label hardware business works. It does mean that brand reputation carries almost no signal here, because the brand often did not design anything.

Somewhere in that process, "stealth bomber" stopped being a product and became a category description, the way people say hoover or dumpster. Sellers use the phrase because buyers search for it. A listing headlined "72V Stealth Bomber Electric Bike" is usually not claiming to be a Stealth product; it is using the words as a shape description. Sometimes, though, the ambiguity is doing deliberate work, and the listing is happy for you to assume you are buying the Australian machine at a quarter of the price.

A quick tell Stealth Electric Bikes sells through a small number of named dealers and its own site. If a listing uses the words "stealth bomber" but never names Stealth Electric Bikes as the manufacturer anywhere in the copy, it is a lookalike. That is not automatically bad, but it changes what you should be checking.

Five things that separate a good one from a dangerous one

Because the badge is meaningless, evaluate the hardware. These five items, in this order, determine whether a machine in this category is safe at the speeds it can reach.

1. Frame and swingarm construction

Look at the welds around the head tube, the swingarm pivot, and the shock mount. These are the three places where a high-power off-road machine fails, and they are the three places a cheap frame skimps. You want visible gusseting at the head tube, a swingarm pivot running on cartridge bearings rather than plain bushings, and welds that look consistent rather than stacked-dime-then-a-gap. Ask what the frame material and treatment are. A 6061 aluminium frame that has been heat treated after welding behaves very differently from one that has not, and the seller who cannot answer that question has told you something useful.

2. Suspension components

This is the single most informative spec in the category. A named fork from a company whose products you can look up, with adjustable compression and rebound damping, tells you the manufacturer spent real money and understood the loads. An unbranded coil fork with no damping adjustment on a 130 lb machine capable of 45 mph is not suspension; it is a spring that occasionally cooperates. On rough ground undamped suspension causes the wheel to skip rather than track, which turns a routine bump into a loss of steering.

3. Brakes relative to weight and speed

Do the arithmetic the seller hopes you will not. Kinetic energy scales with the square of speed, and these machines weigh three to four times what a mountain bike weighs. A machine at 45 mph carrying 130 lb plus a rider has to dissipate an order of magnitude more energy per stop than the mountain bike whose brake parts it borrowed. You want four-piston hydraulic calipers, rotors of 200mm or larger front and rear, and ideally rotors with real venting. Two-piston brakes with 180mm rotors are a serious warning sign, and mechanical disc brakes on anything in this category are disqualifying.

4. Battery pack construction and certification

The pack is the most expensive part and the one most likely to hurt you. Ask three questions: which cells, what certification, and what protection. Named cells from a major manufacturer with a documented continuous discharge rating are what you want. UL 2271 or UL 2849 certification, or at minimum a credible test report, tells you someone put the pack through abuse testing. A battery management system that actually limits charge and discharge current, and balances cells, is the difference between a pack that ages gracefully and one that develops a hot cell. 5. Whether the pedals are functional or decorative

Sit on it and pedal it with the power off. On a machine with a working drivetrain you should be able to move it at a walking pace on flat ground without your knees hitting the tank. On many clones you cannot: the gearing is absurdly tall because the crank drives through a fixed ratio designed to look right rather than work, the crank arms are shortened to clear the frame, and the chainline is bad enough that the chain derails under load. Decorative pedals matter beyond the inconvenience, because they are frequently the fig leaf a seller uses to describe the machine as an electric bicycle.

Why the advertised wattage tells you nothing

Every listing in this category leads with a wattage figure, and the figure is close to meaningless. Nominal motor wattage is a number the seller chooses. There is no standard test behind it, and the same motor is routinely advertised at 3000W by one seller and 5000W by another.

What actually determines output is straightforward physics: power is roughly voltage multiplied by current. A 72V pack feeding a controller that passes 100A is delivering on the order of 7 kW. A 48V pack feeding a 40A controller delivers under 2 kW, even if the motor in both is stamped with the same rating. The pack's ability to actually supply that current, its C-rate, is the third variable, and it is why two machines with identical stated capacity can feel completely different: the one with high-discharge cells pulls hard all the way through, and the one with cheap cells sags after four seconds and gets hot.

So when you compare two machines, get the pack voltage, the controller's battery current limit in amps, and the cells' continuous discharge rating. Those three numbers describe the machine. Many are not, and the listing photos are identical either way. What this category gets right

  • Full suspension that works properly on rough ground, on the good machines
  • Large packs, so range is better than a pedal-less light electric motorcycle
  • Near silence, which changes where and when riding is practical
  • Pedals mean you can theoretically limp home on a dead battery, on the good ones

What you are accepting

  • Not a legal ebike anywhere in the US, regardless of the pedals
  • Brand names carry no information because most are white-labelled
  • Warranty and parts support are frequently nonexistent
  • Weight makes a component failure at speed much more serious
  • Resale is poor because the market is saturated with lookalikes

These are not legal electric bicycles. The federal definition of a low-speed electric bicycle requires functional pedals, a motor under 750W, and a motor-only top speed of 20 mph on level ground. Every machine in this category clears 750W by a wide margin, most by a factor of four or more, and the state three-class systems use the same ceiling. What that means in practice:

  • No bike lanes, no multi-use paths, no greenways. Those are open to bicycles and to class-compliant ebikes. A bomber-style machine is neither.
  • No public road use without registration. A machine over the ebike threshold falls into moped, motor-driven cycle, or motorcycle rules depending on your state, all of which require registration, a plate, and an appropriate licence.
  • Registration is usually impossible anyway. A DMV needs a 17-character VIN, a manufacturer's certificate of origin, and a certification label showing the vehicle meets federal safety standards. Most of these machines have none of them, so there is no path to a plate even for an owner willing to do the paperwork.
  • Insurance follows the classification. A collision on an unregistered motor vehicle is a substantially worse legal and financial position than the same collision on a bicycle, and insurers know how to read a spec sheet.

That leaves private land with permission, and OHV areas that will accept an electric machine. It is worth calling the specific riding area before you go, since many OHV rules were written around combustion engines and staff are inconsistent about how they treat a machine with no exhaust. On the warranty question Treat "1 year warranty" on a marketplace listing as a claim, not a fact. Ask where a replacement controller ships from, what a replacement pack costs, and whether the seller holds frame bearings. If the honest answer is that everything comes from overseas on a six-week lead time, a fault in month three means a machine sitting in your garage until summer.

How to decide

The useful question is not which stealth bomber to buy. It is what the pedals are for.

  • If you want the pedals for legal cover: they do not provide any. At these power levels the machine is a motor vehicle whether or not it has cranks. Buy on the hardware instead.
  • If you want the pedals for real, to get home on a dead pack or to add range: that is a genuine reason, and it narrows you to machines with a working drivetrain. Test the pedals before you buy, because most clones fail here.
  • If the pedals are irrelevant to you: a Sur Ron or Talaria will almost certainly serve you better at the same money. Lighter, better supported, and with an aftermarket that means a broken part is a week rather than a season.
  • If you want the original: buy the original, from Stealth or a named dealer, and accept the price. You are paying for a machine designed as a whole.
  • If your budget is under $3,000: be honest that you are buying an unknown-quality frame with unknown-quality brakes and an uncertified pack, at speeds where all three matter. Spend the inspection time.
