Heybike Explore Review

The spec sheet competes with bikes costing several hundred dollars more. Whether that makes it a bargain depends entirely on questions the spec sheet does not answer.

Put the Heybike Explore's specification next to bikes at its price and it looks like a mistake in your favour. A low step-through frame, fat tyres, a suspension fork, hydraulic disc brakes, integrated lights, fenders, a rear rack, a battery in the 700 Wh region or above, and a torque sensor. That last item is the one that stands out, because torque sensing is the first thing most brands delete to hit a price.

The interesting question is therefore not whether the Explore is well equipped. It plainly is. The question is what the price does not include, and in this segment the answer is almost never the visible parts. It is component provenance, firmware and app maturity, and whether anyone will sell you a battery for this exact model in 2029. Those three things decide whether a well-specified $1,400 bike is a bargain or a two-year rental.

This review works from the published specification, the way this class of bike behaves, and the economics of direct-to-consumer ebike brands. Equipment level scores highest because the fitted kit list genuinely belongs on a more expensive bike, and a torque sensor at this money is not the norm. Ride quality follows from that sensor plus a sensible upright commuter geometry, held back by weight and by fat tyres that are working against you on pavement. Range is strong for the pack size. Long-term support is the column that drags the score down, and it does so deliberately: Heybike is a younger brand with a shorter parts record than Rad or Aventon, and on a bike with a proprietary battery and controller that is a real cost you pay later rather than now. Value lands well above average because the bike you receive on day one is worth more than you paid.

Why the spec sheet punches above its price

There is no magic here, just a different set of trade-offs, and it is worth understanding them because they tell you where the risk sits.

A brand selling direct online with no dealer network, no showrooms and no field service organisation has a materially lower cost base than one that supports a dealer margin. That money goes into the bike. It is a real advantage, and it is why the direct-to-consumer segment consistently offers more hardware per dollar than the bike shop brands. The catch is that the costs the brand removed are the costs that show up after the sale: somebody to diagnose an electrical fault, somebody who has the part on a shelf, somebody who is still trading in four years.

The second lever is scale on shared platforms. Motors, controllers, displays and battery housings in this segment come from a comparatively small number of factories, so a brand can buy a competent 750W class geared hub and a torque-sensing bottom bracket at prices a low-volume brand cannot. That is why the Explore can carry a sensor that a bike shop brand charges extra for.

Where the money usually comes out is the parts nobody photographs. Brake calipers and levers, the derailleur and shifter, the freewheel, the spokes and the tyres. A named Shimano drivetrain part and a named hydraulic brake set behave predictably and can be replaced at any bike shop from stock. The step-through frame, the sensor, and what you feel

The frame is not a compromise

Step-through frames still carry an unearned reputation as the lesser option, and on an electric bike that is backwards. The single least stable moment of any ride is swinging a leg over a saddle on a 75 lb bike with a loaded rack, usually at a standstill, often on a camber. A low top tube removes that moment. It also means you can put both feet down without dismounting, which is what you want in stop-start traffic on a bike you cannot easily hold up with one leg.

The engineering cost is real but manageable: removing the top tube removes a large part of the frame's torsional stiffness, so a well-made step-through compensates with a much larger down tube and reinforcement around the seat tube junction. The cheap ones do not, and the symptom is a vague, slightly wobbly feeling under hard acceleration or when carrying weight. The torque sensor is the headline

A cadence sensor is a ring of magnets on the crank that tells the controller one thing: the pedals are moving. Assist then arrives after a short delay at whatever level the setting dictates, and continues for a beat after you stop pedalling. Your gears become close to decorative and the assist buttons become a throttle you operate with your thumb.

A torque sensor measures actual force, usually through a strain gauge in the bottom bracket or rear dropout, and scales motor output to match. Push harder, get more. Ease off, the motor eases off with you. The practical differences are immediate: power arrives without the delay, the bike does not lurch when you turn the cranks to reposition your feet at a junction, gears matter again, and range improves noticeably because the motor stops delivering full assist during the half of your pedal stroke where you are barely pushing. Fat tyres are a choice with a bill attached

Four inch tyres at low pressure smooth out broken pavement, add grip on gravel and sand, and give a heavy bike a planted feel. They also carry considerably more rolling resistance than a 2 inch commuter tyre at proper pressure, add unsprung rotating mass that makes acceleration and braking feel duller, and are more affected by crosswinds. If your riding is entirely on paved roads, you are paying for capability you never use in both watt hours and effort. If it includes hardpack trails, canal paths or a snowy winter, they earn it. Weight is the other half of the same conversation. At 70 to 80 lb this is not a bike you carry anywhere. Most trunk-mounted car racks are rated at around 60 lb per bike, which means a hitch rack designed for ebikes or nothing at all. Motor, battery and realistic range

Expect a geared rear hub motor in the 750W class, the legal ceiling for a compliant ebike in the United States. Geared hubs suit this bike: the internal reduction produces useful torque at low wheel speeds, which is what a heavy fat-tyre bike needs pulling away from a stop. The limitation is that a hub motor's speed is locked to the wheel, so on a sustained steep climb it drops out of its efficient band and makes heat instead of progress. Range is predicted by watt hours, not amp hours. A 48V 15Ah pack is roughly 720 Wh; a 48V 20Ah pack is roughly 960 Wh. Compare watt hours across bikes and the comparison means something. These are estimates derived from pack size and the power a heavy fat-tyre bike needs at city speeds, not measured results. Fat tyres push every row towards its upper consumption figure, and the torque sensor pulls the pedalling rows back down again by not wasting energy during the weak part of your stroke. A 220 lb rider, a headwind or cold weather moves everything down, sometimes by a third.

The three-year question

This is where the review earns its keep. A bicycle frame, a set of wheels and a derailleur will last a decade with basic care. The things that will not are the battery, the controller, the display and the wiring loom, all of which are proprietary to this model and available from exactly one source. Ask three questions before you order.

Can you buy a replacement battery for this exact model today? Not a battery for the brand, a battery for this model with this housing and this mount. If it is not listed for sale now, while the bike is current, the odds of it being listed in four years are poor. A pack replacement typically runs several hundred dollars and is the single largest ownership cost, which ebike battery replacement breaks down. Is the controller a standard form factor or a sealed proprietary unit? Controllers fail, usually from water ingress at a connector or from a MOSFET giving up under sustained load. A generic 48V controller in a standard housing can be replaced by a competent shop for a modest sum. A sealed unit integrated into the down tube can only be replaced by the manufacturer. Does the bike carry UL 2849 and the battery UL 2271? These are the safety standards covering the complete electrical system and the battery pack respectively. Beyond the fire risk argument, they are increasingly a practical requirement: some apartment buildings, insurers and municipalities now demand certification before they will let you charge indoors. It is also a reasonable proxy for whether the brand invests in engineering it does not have to advertise.

How it compares with Aventon and Lectric

At the same money the honest summary is that Heybike wins the specification and loses the support comparison. Aventon has spent years building a dealer network, which means a real shop can assemble, adjust and warranty the bike, and that is worth paying for if you do not want to true a wheel yourself. Heybike revises specifications between production runs more often than the established brands do, and the same model name has covered more than one configuration. Confirm sensor type, pack size, brake brand and certification status for the exact bike you are being sold rather than relying on any of these bands.

Who should buy it

Buy it if you want the most bike per dollar and you are comfortable being your own mechanic for anything short of an electrical fault. A torque sensor, hydraulic brakes and a large battery at this price is a genuinely strong package, and the routine work is not difficult once you have done it once. Buy it if a low step-over is important and you also want fat tyres. That combination is less common than you would think, because most step-through frames are built as pavement commuters and most fat-tyre bikes are built as high-step adventure bikes.

Buy something else if you want a dealer to hand you a fully assembled bike and take responsibility for it. That is what the extra few hundred dollars at Aventon or a bike shop brand buys, and there is no version of the direct-to-consumer model that replicates it.

Buy something else if you ride exclusively on tarmac and care about effort. A lighter bike on 27.5 inch commuter tyres will be noticeably quicker for the same watt hours, and there are good options in best commuter electric bikes and best electric bikes under $2,000.
