GasGas Electric Bikes: Two Very Different Machines
The same search term returns pedal-assist mountain bikes and pedal-free competition motorcycles. One is a bicycle in the eyes of the law. The other is an off-road vehicle. Getting that wrong is expensive.

GasGas is a Spanish motorcycle company founded in Girona in 1985, and for most of its life it made exactly one kind of thing extremely well: trials bikes. Not motocross, not enduro at first, but trials, the discipline where riders climb boulders at walking pace without putting a foot down. GasGas machines won world championships in that discipline through the 1990s and 2000s, and the engineering culture that came out of it was about low-speed control rather than top speed.
Since 2019 the brand has belonged to Pierer Mobility, the Austrian group that owns KTM and Husqvarna. That changed what GasGas sells. Today the badge appears on two entirely separate product families that share nothing except a logo: pedal-assist electric mountain bikes, and electric motorcycles with no pedals at all.
Search results do not distinguish between them, which is a problem, because the legal status of the two could not be more different. One is a bicycle you can ride on a bike path. The other is an off-highway vehicle that needs registration in most states and is illegal on a public road. Sorting that out is the main job of this page.
Who GasGas actually is now
The Pierer takeover reorganised GasGas into the third brand in a three-brand motorcycle group. KTM is the orange one and sits at the technical front. Husqvarna is the white and blue one with the premium positioning. GasGas is the red one, and in practice the motorcycles are built on shared group platforms with distinct bodywork, distinct suspension and mapping choices, and usually a price a little below the KTM equivalent.
That arrangement is unusually transparent as far as buyers are concerned. You are not getting a lesser machine, you are getting the same engineering with different styling and a different spec sheet position. It is the same logic Volkswagen has applied for decades, and it works fine as long as you know it is happening.
The bicycles came from a different part of the group. Pierer ran a separate bicycle operation that produced ebikes under several badges, GasGas among them, sharing frame platforms and componentry across brands in the same way the motorcycles do. Two products, one search term
Here is the split, stated plainly, because almost every page on this topic blurs it.
GasGas bicycles are electric mountain bikes. They have cranks, a cassette, derailleur gears, hydraulic disc brakes, and a mid-drive motor that only helps while you pedal. Assistance cuts out at 20 mph in US Class 1 trim and 25 km/h in European trim. Motor output is in the 250W nominal range that the whole European eMTB market uses. You cannot ride one without pedalling.
GasGas electric motorcycles have no pedals. There are two sub-families: youth motocross machines aimed at riders roughly six to twelve years old, and trials machines for the discipline the brand was built on. Both have footpegs, a twist throttle or a thumb throttle, a motorcycle-style frame, and no capacity for human propulsion whatsoever. They are motorcycles that happen to run on batteries.
The confusion is not helped by the fact that both are marketed as off-road, both are red, and both are sold as electric. But an eMTB and a youth motocrosser are as different as a mountain bike and a moped. The pedal-assist mountain bikes
GasGas eMTBs cover the standard shape of the modern category: full-suspension trail and enduro bikes with 150mm or more of travel, and hardtails at the lower end of the range. Aluminium frames dominate, with carbon appearing on higher trims in some seasons.
The drive systems are the important part and they are good news. Rather than developing an in-house motor, the group fitted mainstream branded mid-drives, typically Shimano or Bosch performance-class units, depending on model and year. Those two have the deepest dealer and diagnostic coverage in the industry, which means a GasGas eMTB with a motor fault is a solvable problem at a large number of shops even where the brand itself has no presence. That is a bigger practical advantage than any frame detail.
Battery capacity typically lands in the 600 to 750 Wh band on full-power models, which is where the whole eMTB market sits. Expect real-world range of roughly 20 to 40 miles on mixed trail depending on how much climbing you do, how heavy you are, and which assist level you leave it in. Manufacturer range claims for eMTBs are close to fiction because the variable that dominates is vertical feet climbed, not miles ridden. Componentry follows the usual pattern for group-built bikes: house-brand cockpit and wheels, name-brand fork, drivetrain and brakes, with the trim number telling you how much of each. On any eMTB the parts that matter most are the brakes and the rear tyre, because a 50 lb bike carries momentum a normal mountain bike does not. How these ride is essentially how any modern mid-drive eMTB rides, because the motor and the geometry are drawn from the same pool everyone else uses. The electric trials and youth motorcycles
This side of the brand is where the heritage is, and it is genuinely interesting engineering.
Youth electric motocross
The group builds a family of small electric motocross machines sold in near-identical form under all three of its brands, with the GasGas version wearing the MC-E name. The best known is the MC-E 5, a machine sized for riders in roughly the six to twelve age range, with a brushless motor, an adjustable power output so a parent can cap what a beginner gets, and a run time measured in tens of minutes of hard riding rather than hours.
What makes these worth the money over a cheap electric dirt bike from a general retailer is the chassis. Real motocross suspension, real brakes, real geometry, and a parts supply through a motorcycle dealer network. A child who learns on one is learning on a machine that behaves like the bigger bikes they will move to. The obvious counterpoint is price: these are priced like small motorcycles, generally in the region of $5,000, and a child outgrows one in a couple of seasons. Electric trials
Trials is the discipline GasGas is historically famous for, and it suits electric power unusually well. Trials riding happens at almost zero road speed, demands instant and perfectly modulated torque, and rewards a machine that does not stall. An electric motor delivers full torque from zero rpm and has no clutch to slip and no engine to kill, which removes two of the hardest things a beginner has to learn.
Electric trials machines have been part of the GasGas programme in recent years, and the category more broadly is now well established with several manufacturers. These are competition machines: no lights, no registration, a seat that barely exists, and a price at the top of the off-road range. Availability of any specific model shifts, so treat this as a category to investigate with a dealer rather than a product you can order from a spec sheet.

This is the section that stops people making expensive mistakes. The two product families sit on opposite sides of the line that separates a bicycle from a motor vehicle.

The eMTB column is straightforward. A Class 1 pedal-assist mountain bike falls inside the federal definition of a low-speed electric bicycle and inside the three-class state framework, so it is regulated as a bicycle. The motorcycle columns are equally straightforward and much more often misunderstood. A machine with no pedals cannot be an electric bicycle under federal law regardless of its power output, because functional pedals are part of the definition. Specific GasGas bicycle model names have changed between seasons and the bicycle range has been curtailed, so what follows is organised by category rather than by model number. Price bands are approximate and will vary by trim, market, and how old the stock is.

The availability problem, stated honestly
The bicycle side of this brand is not in a stable position. Pierer Mobility went through a severe financial restructuring and scaled back its bicycle operations sharply, which means a GasGas bicycle you find on a shop floor may well be end-of-line stock rather than current production.
That is not automatically a reason to walk away. A discounted bike with a Shimano or Bosch mid-drive is still a bike whose most complex and expensive component is supported by an enormous independent service network, and frames, forks, brakes and drivetrains are all standard parts. What you should extract from the dealer before paying is who honours the frame warranty, who honours the drive system warranty, and whether brand-specific items like the battery mount, display bracket and any proprietary linkage hardware can still be sourced.
Why an end-of-line GasGas eMTB can be a good buy

The motorcycle side is a separate business and is not in the same position. Youth and competition machines from the group are sold through motorcycle dealers with the usual parts supply, and the shared-platform structure means most consumables are common across the three brands.
Which one do you actually want?
Work from what you plan to ride, not from the badge.
- You want to ride singletrack and get up the climbs: the pedal-assist eMTB. It is legal on trails that permit ebikes, it needs no registration, and you can ride it from your front door.
- You want a child to learn motocross properly: the youth electric machine, provided you have a track or legal riding area to use. Do not buy one for neighbourhood riding, because there is nowhere legal to do that.
- You want to learn trials: an electric trials machine is a genuinely better learning tool than a petrol one, since it removes the clutch and the stall. It is also a serious purchase with essentially no casual use case.
- You want something to commute on: none of these. GasGas builds off-road machines. Look at a commuter-focused ebike instead.
The single most useful habit when shopping this brand, or any brand that straddles the line, is to check for pedals before you check anything else.
