A century-old children's wagon company has one genuine advantage over every ebike startup: it has spent a hundred years working out how to carry kids without dropping them. That turns out to matter more than motor wattage.

Radio Flyer has been making the little red wagon in Chicago since 1917, when Antonio Pasin started stamping steel bodies for a product he originally built in wood. Flyer is the company's electric bike line, and the first reaction most people have is that a toy company has wandered into a category it does not understand.

That reaction is backwards. Almost every consumer brand that puts its name on an ebike is licensing the name to somebody else, which means the bike has no engineering relationship to the thing the brand is famous for. Radio Flyer is doing something different: it built its own line, and the thing it is famous for is carrying children safely on wheels. Rope handles, tip resistance, guard rails, pinch points, the weight a five year old can actually pull. That is a hundred years of institutional knowledge about exactly the problem a family ebike has to solve.

What Radio Flyer does not have is a hundred years of drivetrain, battery, and brake engineering. So the honest way to evaluate a Flyer is to separate the two halves: the passenger side, where the brand has a genuine edge, and the bicycle side, where it is competing on the same terms as everyone else.

The short version Flyer builds family and light cargo ebikes, with a longtail model designed to carry two children and a shorter model for one passenger or a load. The passenger accessories are better thought out than most of the segment. On price, motor specification, and parts channel, the established cargo brands are usually ahead. Buy Flyer if you are mainly carrying kids, and buy on specification if you are mainly carrying things.

What the wagon company actually brings

The useful question is which parts of wagon expertise transfer to a bicycle, and the answer is more than you would guess.

Pinch points and entrapment. Anything with a rotating wheel next to a child's foot is a serious hazard, and it is the single most common injury on a bike carrying a passenger. A child's heel goes into the spokes and the result is a fracture or worse. Wheel guards that actually cover the useful arc, mounted so they cannot rotate out of position, are a design detail that toy safety engineers think about constantly and bike engineers historically did not.

Restraint and grip. A child on a rear deck has to hold on for twenty minutes. Grab handles placed where a small hand naturally reaches, at the right diameter for a small palm, are unglamorous engineering and they are the difference between a passenger who is secure and one who is fidgeting.

Testing standards. A juvenile products company lives under consumer product safety testing regimes that are more aggressive than bicycle standards, because the assumed user is a toddler with poor judgement. That habit does not disappear when the product grows a motor.

What does not transfer: motor efficiency, battery management, brake modulation, frame fatigue under a moving load, and drivetrain durability. Those are bicycle problems and they are judged on the spec sheet like anyone else's.

What Flyer actually sells

The line has centred on two shapes, and the naming uses letter and number codes rather than words.

The longtail (the L885). A long wheelbase family bike with an extended rear deck sized for two children, a step-through frame, a rear hub motor, and a Class 2 throttle setup. This is the model the whole brand argument rests on, and it is the one to look at if you are doing school runs.

The shorter utility model (the M880). A more compact machine sized for one passenger or a load rather than two, with a smaller footprint that is easier to store and park. Confirm the passenger accessory list for the exact model year before you assume it will take a child seat, because accessory compatibility in this segment changes between revisions.

Both use rear hub drive rather than a mid-drive, which is the normal choice at this price and has a real consequence on hills. A hub motor pushes the wheel directly at whatever gear-independent torque it can make. A mid-drive turns the cranks and therefore multiplies through your gears, which is why loaded cargo bikes from the specialist brands increasingly use them. The payload maths nobody does

Every cargo and family ebike publishes a total payload figure, usually somewhere between 400 and 450 lb for bikes in this class, and Flyer publishes one for its longtail in that region. That number is total. It includes you.

Run the arithmetic honestly, because this is where family ebike purchases go wrong:

  • Rider: 180 lb
  • Child one, age 7: 55 lb
  • Child two, age 4: 40 lb
  • Two backpacks, a water bottle, a lock: 20 lb
  • Groceries on the way home: 25 lb

That is 320 lb, comfortably inside a 400 lb rating. Now change the rider to 230 lb and the children to ages 10 and 7, and you are at roughly 420 lb, which is over the limit on many bikes in this class and marginal on the rest. Kids gain weight faster than you expect, and a family ebike is a five-year purchase. Buy for the children you will have in year four, not the ones you have now.

There is usually a second number worth finding: the rear rack or deck rating on its own, which is lower than the total payload and is the one that governs your two passengers. If the brand publishes only one figure, ask for the other. A longtail under a shifting load

Here is the part product pages never explain. A longtail carrying two children does not handle like a bike carrying a 95 lb sack, because a sack does not lean.

Two things are happening. First, the mass sits high and behind the rear axle, which lengthens the effective moment arm on every steering input. Small handlebar corrections take longer to work through, so the bike feels vague at walking pace and reassuringly planted above about 10 mph. Second, children move. A child who turns to look at something shifts 40 lb of mass laterally at the worst possible height, and the bike responds by trying to fall in that direction. This is why experienced cargo riders keep speed on through turns instead of slowing to a crawl: gyroscopic stability and forward momentum do most of the correcting for you.

Three design details make this manageable:

  • Low bottom bracket and a long wheelbase. Both lower the centre of gravity relative to the wheel contact patches and slow the rate at which a lean becomes a fall. Longtails do this well by geometry.
  • A genuinely stable stand. A double-leg centre stand that lifts the rear wheel is not optional on a family bike. Loading a child onto a bike propped on a single-leg kickstand is how bikes go over, and it happens in the driveway, not on the road.
  • Low standover. You will need to get on and off with the bike already loaded, and you cannot swing a leg over the back when the back is full of children. A step-through frame is functionally required, not a style choice. Brakes for the extra mass

A loaded family ebike is a 300 lb to 400 lb system, roughly double a solo rider on an ordinary ebike, and stopping distance scales with mass. Hydraulic disc brakes are the minimum. Rotor size matters more than the caliper: 180mm front is a sensible floor and 203mm is better, particularly if you live anywhere with a descent on the school route. Heat is the real enemy on a long downhill with a full bike, and a bigger rotor is mostly a bigger heat sink.

Carrying passengers is a state question

Two separate legal layers apply, and people conflate them.

The first is the ebike class system, which decides where you may ride. Class 2 bikes with throttles have good street and bike lane access but get excluded from some multi-use paths, which is exactly the infrastructure a parent riding with kids wants to use. The second is passenger law, and it varies more than the class system does. The common provisions across states look like this:

  • A bicycle may not carry more people than it is designed and equipped for. A longtail with fitted seats and footrests satisfies this. A rear rack with a cushion on it usually does not.
  • Several states set a minimum age for a child carried on a bicycle, commonly around one year, tied to the child's ability to sit unsupported and hold up a helmet.
  • Helmet requirements for young riders are widespread, typically for under-16 or under-18, and they apply to passengers as well as riders.
  • A few states restrict passengers on Class 3 bikes specifically, or set a minimum operator age that is higher than for other classes.

None of this is exotic and none of it is hard to comply with. It is simply worth reading your own state's statute once, because the rule that catches people is usually the equipment clause rather than an age limit.

Flyer versus the cargo specialists

Three groups of bikes compete for a family ebike budget, and they are not really the same product.

The dedicated cargo brands are better bikes and they cost two to three times as much. That is a defensible purchase if you are genuinely replacing a car, and an extravagant one if you are doing a mile each way to school. If your primary load is cargo, or your route has real climbs, the specification-led alternatives give you more bike for the money and the mid-drive cargo brands give you more capability for a lot more money.
