Measure your standover before you order Stand in socks with a book pulled firmly up between your legs, mark the top of the book against a wall, and measure to the floor. That is your inseam. The frame's standover height should be at least two inches below it. This takes two minutes and it is the only way to know a step-through actually steps through for you, because "low step" is a marketing phrase with no fixed meaning.

Why a bike like this feels the way it does

Two riders can buy bikes with identical motors, identical batteries and identical top speeds and describe the ride completely differently. The variable is almost always the assist sensor.

A cadence sensor is a ring of magnets on the crank spindle and a pickup on the frame. It knows one thing: whether the cranks are turning. Most people who buy a fat tyre bike ride it almost entirely on pavement, where the tyres cost range and weight and return nothing. If your route is roads and paved paths, the narrower step-through is the better bike and it is usually cheaper. The high wattage version of a comfort bike is a strange product. The buyer who wants a low step-through and wide tyres is not usually the buyer who needs 1000W, and the extra power lands on a chassis specified for less. What to verify before ordering

These apply to any brand in this tier. They are quick, and they remove most of the ways this purchase disappoints.

  1. UL 2849 certification. This is the standard that covers the whole electrical system, including charger and controller, rather than just the pack. UL 2271 is the pack-only standard and a weaker claim. Many apartment buildings and a growing number of cities now require certification for indoor charging, so this can be a hard constraint rather than a preference.
  2. Named battery cells. Samsung, LG or Panasonic is checkable. A capacity number on its own tells you nothing about cycle life or how the pack will hold capacity in year three.
  3. Brakes in writing. If the listing says "disc brakes" with no further detail, assume mechanical cable. Ask directly, and ask the rotor diameter.
  4. Standover and saddle range against your body. Measured, not estimated.
  5. Payload with headroom. Add your weight, your usual cargo and anything on the rack, then leave margin.
  6. Warranty terms and mechanism. Length matters less than who does the labour and who pays the shipping. Get the answer by email.
  7. Spares in two years. Ask whether the battery, controller and display will be stocked after the model is retired. The battery answer is the one that matters.
  8. Local service. Call two shops and ask whether they will work on a bike from this brand. If both decline, you are the mechanic, and the total cost of ownership just went up.

The strongest argument for a bike in this tier is that it gets someone riding who otherwise would not be. That is worth a great deal, and no amount of component snobbery changes it.
