Cafe Racer Electric Bikes: Buying the Look Honestly
Tank shrouds, brown leather, and low bars sell more ebikes than any spec sheet ever has. Here is what the styling costs you in weight, comfort, and mounting points, and which bikes give you the look without the penalty.

Nothing in the ebike market converts a casual browser into a buyer faster than a tank shroud and a set of brown leather grips. The retro category exists because a bicycle with a battery is a slightly awkward object, and dressing it as a 1960s Triumph or a 1910s board track racer resolves the awkwardness instantly. It reads as a machine rather than as a bicycle with an appliance strapped to it.
That is a legitimate reason to buy something. The trouble starts when the styling and the engineering disagree, which on cheap retro bikes they almost always do. A tank that holds nothing adds weight. Bars that look right put your wrists in the wrong place. A saddle shaped like a motorcycle seat cannot be raised to where your legs want it. None of this shows up in a product photo, and all of it shows up on your third ride.

What defines the look, and which era it borrows from
Two distinct motorcycle traditions get blended together under the cafe racer label, and knowing which one a bike is quoting tells you what to expect from its ergonomics.
The cafe racer proper comes from early 1960s Britain, where riders stripped touring motorcycles down to run between transport cafes as fast as possible. The signatures are functional: clip-on or low drag bars, rearset footpegs, a humped solo seat, a slim tank, and no bodywork that does not earn its place. Everything about the position exists to get the rider low and forward at speed.
The board track racer comes from American motordromes of the 1910s, and it is the look most retro ebikes actually copy, whatever they call themselves. Its signatures are a straight top tube, a large bulbous tank filling the main triangle, a long low saddle, wide spoked wheels with cream or gumwall tires, a girder or leaded-link front end, and lots of exposed brass and chrome. It is the shape that translates most naturally onto a bicycle frame, because a bicycle main triangle is roughly tank-shaped already.
Adjacent styles get borrowed too: a bobber means shortened fenders and a solo sprung saddle, a scrambler means knobby tires and a high line. If the marketing copy uses all four words in one paragraph, the bike was designed by a decal set.
- Tank shroud
- The single most defining element. On good bikes it is the battery enclosure. On cheap bikes it is a hollow shell adding 2 to 5 lb of weight and zero function.
- Bars
- Low drag bars, clip-ons, or a narrow flat bar with almost no rise. Puts weight on the hands. Look for a bike with a conventional threadless stem so you can change this later.
- Saddle
- Long, wide, often brown vinyl sold as leather, sometimes with visible coil springs. Comfortable for 20 minutes; too low and too far forward for pedalling efficiency.
- Wheels
- Spoked, usually 36 hole, often 20 x 4.0 in or 26 x 2.4 in with cream sidewalls. The spoke count is fine. The build quality is what varies.
- Front end
- Springer, girder, or a rigid fork with fork gaiters. Cosmetic first, functional a distant second.
- Finishing
- Brass or copper accents, ribbed grips, a headlight in a chromed bucket, and paint that is either genuinely deep or a single thin coat over raw aluminium.
What is inside the tank, which is usually nothing
On a motorcycle the tank does three jobs. It carries fuel, it gives the rider something to grip with their knees under braking, and it hides the frame spine. On an ebike there is no fuel, you are not gripping anything with your knees at 20 mph, and the frame is the selling point. So the tank has to justify itself some other way, and there are only three honest answers.
It houses the battery. This is the version worth paying for. Super73 built its whole S-series around a frame where the pack sits in the space the styling wants a tank to occupy, so the shape and the packaging agree instead of fighting. The battery is protected, the mass sits low and central, and no weight is wasted on decoration. Ask whether the pack is removable for charging, because a fixed in-frame battery means you carry the whole bike to the outlet, and it makes the eventual replacement a workshop job rather than a shelf swap.
It is lockable storage. Rare, and genuinely useful. A cavity that swallows a folding lock, a tube, and a charger earns its weight. Check that the lid seals, because an unsealed cavity on a bike with no front fender fills with road grit within a month.
It is nothing. The common case at the bottom of the market. A hollow ABS or thin steel shell, bolted through two brackets, adding 2 to 5 pounds and a resonant buzz over broken pavement. It also blocks the standard bottle bosses and makes a frame bag impossible, so you lose two of the three sensible places to put anything on a bicycle.
Low bars, long reach, and the position problem
This is the part the photographs hide, and it is the reason most retro ebikes get ridden less than their owners expected.
On a motorcycle, low bars work because the machine carries your weight through the seat and the tank, and the engine does all the work. On a bicycle, low bars mean your upper body weight goes into your hands. Riders on drop-bar road bikes tolerate that because they are pedalling hard, and pedalling generates an upward force through the legs that unloads the arms. On a throttle-equipped retro ebike you are often not pedalling at all, so you are holding a static plank at 20 mph with the wind pushing on your chest. Twenty minutes of that produces numb outer fingers, which is ulnar nerve compression from sustained pressure across the base of the palm, and a sore neck from having to extend it upward to see where you are going with a flat back.
The saddle is the second half of the problem. A long motorcycle-style seat is usually bolted low to a short mast or a rigid pan, so it cannot be raised. Correct pedalling position puts your knee at roughly 25 to 30 degrees of bend at the bottom of the stroke. Retro seating routinely leaves you at 60 or 70 degrees, where you produce very little power and load the front of the knee joint in the way that produces anterior knee pain.
None of this matters if your honest use case is a three mile throttle ride to the beach. It matters a great deal if you intend to pedal. Two cheap parts separate the bikes that can do both from the ones that cannot: a conventional round seatpost of 27.2 to 31.6 mm, so you can fit any saddle at any height, and a threadless stem with a 31.8 mm clamp, so you can fit a riser bar later. Spoked wheels, springer forks, and the brakes underneath the chrome
Wheels
Spoked wheels are correct for the look and correct engineering, so there is no conflict here in principle. Retro ebikes typically use 36 hole rims with straight 12 or 13 gauge spokes, which is a sensible build for a heavy bike. The variable is tension and finishing, not spoke count.
Two things to watch. On a rear hub motor the flange is very wide, so the bracing angle is poor and spokes carry uneven tension; have the wheel tensioned at around 100 miles and again at 500. And cream or gumwall tires with a classic file tread grip poorly in the wet, with many not rated for ebike loads at all. Springer and girder forks
A leading-link springer front end with an exposed coil is the single strongest visual cue in the category, and it is almost always worse than no suspension at all. Most give 30 to 50 mm of travel with no damping. Undamped means the spring stores the energy from a bump and returns all of it, so the front of the bike oscillates rather than settling. On a 70 pound machine with a 4 inch tire this produces a slow bouncing motion under braking and a vague feeling in corners as the linkage changes the fork rake through its travel.
A rigid fork with a wide tire run at 12 to 18 psi is more comfortable, lighter, cheaper, and does not pogo. A properly damped suspension fork is better than either but very rarely appears on a retro bike because it wrecks the silhouette. If a springer is the reason you want the bike, buy it for the reason it exists, which is that it looks superb.
Brakes
Retro bikes carry a genuine safety problem here, because clean vintage lines argue against big rotors and thick hoses. A moto-styled ebike commonly weighs 65 to 85 pounds before the rider, which means a bike and rider system of 250 to 300 pounds moving at 20 to 28 mph. That needs hydraulic discs with 180 mm rotors as a floor, and 203 mm on anything doing Class 3 speeds or carrying weight. Mechanical calipers with 160 mm rotors, which is what a lot of the sub-$1,800 retro bikes ship with, fade on the second hard stop of a descent. This is the first thing to check and the last thing marketing will mention, for the reasons set out in ebike brakes: rotors, pads, and stopping power.
Fenders, racks, and the mounting problem nobody photographs
Here is the thing that catches people three weeks after delivery. You want to ride the bike to work, so you need a rack for a pannier and a fender so your back stays dry. On most retro ebikes there is nowhere to bolt either one.
The reasons stack up. The tank shroud occupies the bottle bosses. The seat stays on a moto-styled frame are often curved or bridged in a way that leaves no rack eyelets at the top. Many retro frames have no dropout eyelets at all, because the designer did not want visible threaded bosses breaking up the lines. And the tire is the real killer: a 4 inch tire needs a fender roughly 5 inches wide with a matching radius, and that fender needs to mount on stays that clear the fork legs of a springer front end. Very few such fenders exist, and none of them look vintage.
The stock solution is a bobbed fender covering perhaps 90 degrees of the wheel arc. Water thrown from the contact patch leaves the tire well before that fender starts, which is why you still get a wet stripe up your back.
The weight compounds it. At 65 to 85 pounds a retro ebike is at the top of what a hitch rack will take and well past any trunk rack rating, so carrying it becomes a several hundred dollar decision. Getting one up a flight of stairs is a two-person job.
What the retro look buys you
- A bike people stop and ask about, which is not a trivial thing if you enjoy owning objects
- Genuinely low and central mass on the bikes where the tank is the battery enclosure
- Spoked wheels with high spoke counts, which is the right build for a heavy bike
- Wide tires and a long wheelbase, which makes the bike very stable in a straight line
- A riding position that suits short throttle-led trips extremely well
What it quietly takes away
- Two to five pounds of decorative shroud on bikes where the tank holds nothing
- A saddle that often cannot be raised to a height your knees will tolerate
- Hand and neck load from low bars, made worse by not pedalling
- Few or no eyelets for a rack, and no fender that both fits and looks right
- Undamped springer forks that bounce more than they absorb
- Class 2 bikes shipped with an unlock menu that quietly makes them unregistered vehicles
Four retro ebikes and what each is honest about
These are chosen for how well the styling and the engineering agree, not for how good the photographs are. Prices move constantly, so treat them as brackets.
Vintage Electric Roadster
- Board track racer styling with a real hand-finished frame and paint
- 750W rear hub, Class 1 or 2 on road with an off-road unlock mode
- Battery integrated into the frame rather than hidden in a dummy tank
- Hydraulic discs and a wheel build that suits the bike weight
Vintage Electric has been building this shape since well before the retro wave, and it shows in the details that are expensive to get right: paint depth, brazing, and a wheel build that stays true. The off-road mode raises the assist ceiling substantially and the company is upfront that it is for private land.
Super73 S2
- 20 x 4.5 in tires, long saddle, and a frame where the tank area is the battery
- Class 2 as delivered with selectable modes above that
- A large first-party accessory catalogue including racks, fenders, and mirrors
- Removable pack, which matters if you charge indoors
The reason this bike keeps appearing in these lists is not the styling. It is that Super73 sells the parts that make a moto-styled bike liveable, so the fenders and racks fit properly instead of being clamped on. The riding position is still long and low, and the 20 inch wheels ride harder over broken pavement than a 26 inch wheel would.
Michael Blast Greaser
- Board track styling with a tank shroud, sprung saddle, and cream tires
- Rear hub motor in the 500W to 750W range, Class 2 throttle
- Cruiser-height bars rather than true clip-ons, which helps a lot
- Check the brake specification carefully before ordering
This is the bracket where the look becomes affordable and the componentry becomes the compromise. The styling is convincing and the geometry more forgiving than it appears, but budget for a brake upgrade and expect to have the wheels tensioned early.

It gets the warmth of the retro look through paint, grips, and saddle rather than through bodywork, and in exchange you get a torque-sensing mid-drive, a low centre of gravity, real fenders, and a bike that fits an adult. If what you want is a bike with character rather than a costume, this is the honest end of the category, and it overlaps with the beach cruiser electric bike segment.

How to choose one you will still be riding next year
Work through these in order. The first two settle most purchases.
- Be honest about trip length. Under five miles the ergonomic objections above barely register and you should buy whatever you find beautiful. Over ten miles regularly you need a normal seatpost and adjustable bars, which eliminates about half the category immediately.
- Decide whether you need to carry anything. If yes, only shortlist bikes with real eyelets and a manufacturer rack pictured fitted. A 4 inch tire and a springer fork defeat almost every universal fender on the market.
- Set a brake floor and hold it. Hydraulic discs, 180 mm minimum. On a 70 pound bike this is not an upgrade, it is the specification.
- Establish what the tank is. Battery enclosure, storage, or decoration. Decoration is fine if you know that is what the price is buying.
- Check the class as shipped and what the menu can change. Buy the bike you can legally ride on the routes you actually use.
The category has a real place. A retro ebike is an excellent second bike and one of the few things in cycling that people who do not cycle find appealing. It is a poor commuter unless you buy carefully, and a poor distance bike almost regardless of what you spend.
