24 Inch Electric Bikes
The size nobody markets and a specific group of riders genuinely needs. It softens what makes 20 inch harsh and lowers what makes 26 inch unreachable, and it charges you in choice.

Most wheel size decisions get made for you by the bike category. Folders and cargo bikes are 20 inch, mountain bikes are 27.5 or 29, and everything else defaults to 26. 24 inch is the exception: nobody ends up on it by accident. Riders choose it deliberately, usually because the other sizes have failed them in a specific way.
That specific way is almost always fit. A 20 inch bike will fit a 5 ft rider, but it rides harshly and steers quickly, and a lot of people who bought one because it was the only thing with a low standover are quietly unhappy with it. A 26 inch bike rides better but the smallest frames still leave a short rider on tiptoes at a stop. 24 inch is the size that resolves that, and its problem is not how it rides. Its problem is that hardly anyone builds it.
What 24 inch actually is
The inch number on a bicycle wheel is a historical label, not a measurement. What determines whether a tire fits is the bead seat diameter of the rim in millimetres, given by ISO and printed on every tire sidewall as part of a pair like 50-507.

- The standard 24 inch rim, and the one on essentially every 24 inch ebike sold in North America. If a listing does not say, assume 507.
- ISO 540
- Also labelled 24 inch. Found on some European adult trikes, older juvenile bikes, and a few wheelchair applications. Not interchangeable with 507.
- Finished diameter, 24 x 2.4
- Roughly 630 mm, about 24.8 inches. Around 2 inches taller than a 20 x 3 wheel and about 1.6 inches shorter than a 26 x 2.2.
- Rolling radius, 24 x 2.4
- About 0.315 m. This is the number that governs both hub motor thrust and how the wheel meets an obstacle.
The finished diameter figures are worth sitting with, because they explain why 24 inch feels different from what people expect. It is not halfway between 20 and 26 in ride quality. It is closer to 26 than the label suggests, because a typical 24 inch tire is wider than a typical 26 inch mountain tire is tall above the rim. Most of the harshness people associate with small wheels disappears by the time you reach this size.
Who the size suits
Adults roughly 4 ft 10 in to 5 ft 4 in
Wheel diameter puts a floor under standover height on a diamond frame, since the top tube must clear the front wheel. Drop the wheel two inches and the designer gets two inches of freedom to work with, which is the difference between a rider flat-footing at a stoplight and balancing on the ball of one foot. It also shortens the reach naturally, so short riders are less likely to end up stretched out over a cockpit built for someone else.

Teens moving off a youth bike
A rider who has outgrown a 20 inch youth bike but is not yet at adult proportions is the classic 24 inch case, and it is the only place in the market where the size is well supported. Youth eMTBs and hybrids in this size exist from real brands, they are built to sensible weights, and they have speed limiting built in. Riders who tried 20 inch and did not like it
This group is larger than the market acknowledges. Someone buys a 20 inch folder because it was affordable and had a low step-through, then discovers their commute has a section of frost damaged asphalt that beats them up daily. 24 inch fixes most of that without going back to a frame they cannot straddle.
How it rides between 20 and 26
When a wheel meets a square edge, a curb lip or a broken slab, the angle at which it first makes contact is set by the ratio of obstacle height to wheel radius. A shallower angle means more of the impact goes into lifting the wheel over the edge and less goes into pushing it backwards into the frame and your hands.
For a 2 inch lip, a 20 inch wheel meets it at roughly 36 degrees, a 24 inch wheel at roughly 33, and a 26 inch wheel at roughly 32. The gap between 24 and 26 is small. The gap between 20 and 24 is not, and it is the reason riders who move up a size describe the change as dramatic even though the arithmetic looks modest. Backwards impact is momentum removed from the bike, so the smaller wheel is not just harsher, it is slower over rough ground and asks more of the motor to make it back.
The second thing that changes is rut behaviour. A longitudinal crack, a slab gap, or a tram rail that swallows a 20 inch wheel will more often be bridged by a 24 inch one. This is the specific failure mode that makes riders describe small wheel bikes as twitchy, and it improves faster with diameter than the comfort figures suggest.
What does not improve much is high speed stability. Rotational inertia and self centring both scale gently with wheel size, and neither is the dominant factor anyway. Wheelbase, head angle, and fork trail matter far more, and those are frame decisions. A 24 inch bike on a short nervous frame will still feel nervous.
Torque, gearing, and top speed
Force at the road equals hub motor torque divided by the wheel's rolling radius, so the smaller wheel is a shorter lever and produces more thrust from the same motor. 24 inch sits usefully on this curve without going to the extreme.

Against a 26 inch wheel, 24 inch gives about 6 percent more thrust. That is real but not transformative, and it is not a reason to choose the size on its own. Against 29 inch the gap is about 16 percent, which is enough to notice on a climb from a standstill.
The corresponding cost is top speed. A hub motor has a maximum rpm set by its winding and the pack voltage, and a smaller wheel covers less ground per revolution, so the unloaded top speed drops by the same ratio the thrust rose. On a factory built bike this is already accounted for in the motor winding. On a conversion it is not, and dropping a motor specified for 26 inch into a 24 inch wheel gives you a bike that pulls hard and then flattens out early.
Pedalling gearing shifts too. Gear inches equal wheel diameter times chainring teeth divided by cog teeth, so a 24 inch bike needs roughly 8 percent more chainring to reach the same gear as a 26 inch one. On a youth bike this is usually handled correctly. On a cheap adult 24 inch bike it sometimes is not, and you will spin out early and let the motor carry you.
The availability problem, stated plainly
This is the section that should decide whether you buy the size, and most 24 inch guides skip it.
ISO 507 is an orphan in the adult market. It is sustained almost entirely by children's bicycles, which means the tires that exist are designed for a 70 pound rider on a 25 pound bike, not for a 180 pound rider on a 60 pound ebike carrying groceries. Practically, that produces three problems:
- Very few ebike rated casings. The ECE-R75 marking that indicates a tire is approved for higher speed powered use is common in 20, 26, and 27.5 inch and rare in 24. You will usually be fitting a bicycle tire and accepting faster wear.
- Thin selection at both ends. There are few genuine puncture resistant commuter tires and almost no fat options. Tread choice runs from juvenile knobbly to juvenile slick.
- Shops may not stock tubes. A 26 inch or 700c tube is behind every counter in the country. A 507 tube often is not, especially in a Presta length that suits a deep ebike rim.
None of this is a reason to avoid the size if it fits you. It is a reason to buy two spare tubes and a spare tire the day the bike arrives, and to fit the best casing you can find rather than the cheapest. There is more on how ebike loads change tire wear in ebike tires and wheels.
Bike selection is thin for the same structural reason. It is also worth knowing that a few manufacturers use sizes near 24 inch without matching it: Rad Power's cargo bike, for instance, uses a bespoke 22 inch wheel, which has an even shorter tire list. Bikes worth shortlisting
The adult 24 inch market is small enough that these are picked for distinct jobs rather than ranked. Prices are approximate bands, and specifications are as the manufacturers describe them.

The clearest demonstration of what 24 inch is for on an adult bike. The wheels keep the deck and the standover low without dropping to the harshness of 20 inch, and the frame mounted front rack means a load does not affect steering the way a fork mounted basket does. A mid-tail sits between a normal bike and a full longtail, and the 24 inch wheels are what let the deck sit low enough to load a child onto without lifting them over your hip. It carries less than a full length cargo bike and fits in more places, which for a lot of households is the better trade.

Worth knowing about if you are trying to keep a young rider on family trail rides rather than pushing them up climbs. The important detail is not the motor but the fork: an adult suspension fork on a 90 pound rider never moves, and a fork tuned for that weight is the difference between a bike that works and a rigid bike with extra weight.
Should you buy 24 inch?
Reasons it is the right call
- You are roughly 4 ft 10 in to 5 ft 4 in and standover is the limiting factor
- You are buying for a teenager who has outgrown a 20 inch youth bike
- You tried a 20 inch bike and found it harsh on your regular roads
- You want a low cargo or utility deck without the ride penalty of 20 inch
- The bike you want happens to be built in this size and fits you properly
Reasons to look elsewhere
- You are over about 5 ft 5 in, where 26 inch gives more for nothing
- You want a wide choice of tires, or ebike rated casings specifically
- You want a folding bike, which effectively means 20 inch
- You are shopping the budget end, where the 24 inch options are mostly unbranded
- You want to be able to buy a tube in any bike shop on a Sunday
Buy 24 inch when it solves a fit problem you actually have. That is a narrow but genuine case, and for the riders in it the size is clearly better than the alternatives on both sides. Do not buy it because it sounds like a sensible middle ground in the abstract, because the middle ground comes with a supply chain that is worse than either neighbour.
Before you commit, do two things. Check the published standover height against your inseam rather than trusting the wheel size, and look up what tires exist in ISO 507 in the width the bike takes. If both answers work, the size is a good one.
